Men's basketball coach Jeff Capel's new contract guarantees a $450,000 raise to $1.5 million for next season. The deal, which runs through the 2015-16 season, will top out at $1.9 million in its final year. Capel's contract also calls for a one-time stay bonus of $ 1.1 million payable in June of 2014. He'll also receive an additional $400,000 if he's still the Sooners' coach at the end of 2015-16 season.

(The article did not mention anything about a buyout clause.)

good job. Now IF he doesn't have a buyout clause, does that make OU on the hook for the rest of the contract?

So the buyout could be as much as $10.23 million, that is a lot of money even here. I think he is back next year unless things completely fall apart and it is clear there is no chance Jeff can't turn it around.

I would like to hire his agent to do my negotiating.

More importantly explain to me why OU another schools don't negotiate an out clause. I guaranty Capel would have taken that deal if OU had included a one million dollar buy out if ou missed the post season twice in a row. Joe C. Failed to protect himself. It is fine to compensate someone and give them security but make them agree to a reasonable termination clause if they are not performing. What is your responseif you are Capel, no I might miss the post season two years in a row and that is acceptable?

Man, you can make a lot of money to lose basketball games.

i very much doubt that capel would have remained at ou under those conditions. for better or worse, a successful incumbent coach has for more leverage in negotiating contracts than the school does.

I highly doubt it is all guaranteed. It wouldn't surprise me if the stay bonuses are guaranteed if he is let go early, but I'm not so sure about the rest of it.

That is a pretty good contract for any D1 basketball coach!!Joe C.did"nt forsee that Capel was going to struggle with coaching & keeping top talent on campus.Blake G.blurred his vision & helped get Capel rich..Go Sooners!

Capel should send at least half of his check to Blake, if not all of it.

So if you were a coach, you wouldn't take a huge pay raise that included a buyout clause that said missing the post season two years in a row was grounds to terminate for $1,000,0000?

How do you take such a position with a straight face? It is like negotiating default provisions on a loan. The bank says "but you are going to pay us so what is the problem". It is pretty hard to respond to such a statement and as a result, you have very little negotiating power with the bank.

The guy was being given a huge pay raise and extension. It is more than reasonable that the employer expect some minimal level of performance, especially when it is tied to consecutive years. Certainly Capel's agent/attorney would have advised of the risks but the alternative was keeping the old contract and/or taking a new job that didn't exist yet.

Question for the board:

Is OU getting its money's worth?

Or, ... is coach earning his salary?

I've been pretty critical of Capel lately, but this "Capel can't win without Blake" or "Capel should send his check to Blake" crap is getting old fast. A big part of being a college coach is recruiting. Why is it that Capel seemingly gets punished for recruiting and landing one of the greatest players in OU history? I don't care how he got Blake here or what the circumstances were, the fact is he got it done. It's just like I don't care what the circumstances are surrounding our current struggles, the fact is we are struggling and that's all that matters.

I think the point people are making when they say that Capel can't win without Blake isn't that he doesn't deserve credit for signing him, but that it's extremely unlikely he will ever sign a player of his caliber ever again, and he has not proven that he can win in the Big 12 without the best collegiate player on the planet.

At least, that's the way I interpret it.

Very good interpretation.

You need good players to win, but Blake is an even bigger variable than just having a good player. He is a freak of nature. Nobody at the college (and apparently NBA) level can stop him.

When you have someone like that on your team, plus the other guys they had, you can't really lose.

His awful record without someone like that brings into question just how important having Blake Griffin was for Jeff Capel.

Unless your the Clippers :)

Remember when OSU and Nebraska fans were saying Bob Stoops couldn't win without John Blakes recruits?

That's how idiotic Capel can't win without Blake is and the origin is the same. Rivals of OU say that BS and some Sooners are weak enough to get sucked into it.
