Is it possible to be a top 5 program

Without having a national championship banner?

I guess I'd say it depends what the other top 5 schools resumes are.
In the terms of college basketball I'd say no. Too many other great programs with multiple championships

I know OU isn't in the running for a top 5 spot but I was wondering if a team that makes the final four regularly and even plays in a national championship game every few years but just hasn't won the big one, can they be considered a top 5 program.

Right now we are struggling to be a top teir team in the Big 12!!Wishfull thinking though...GO SOONERS!!!!!!!!

Norm I understand your question, and it doesn't really have any thing to do with OU per se. If you look at the "top 5" programs considered by most Basketball pundits, they all have a NC in their resume. As far as the men's side of affairs I think you do have to collect at least one Championship to be considered in the elite 5. Most of the considered programs have more. It is funny that the team with the most Championships today is not even a top ten by today's standards. Certainly as time goes by different teams will move in and out of the 5 status, but there will probably always be the same two or three on that list depending on coaches and their eventual success.

I know it wasnt meant to be about OU, but since this is an OU board i can see how some could draw that conclusion

If you mean like in the present time then I think probably but if you are talking all time then no.

I think most would say MSU is either a Top 5 program or close to it and they haven't won a title in the last 5 years. Florida, on the other hand, has won 2 titles in the last 5 years and aren't a Top 5 program right now, imo.

A great team can win a school a NC, but great programs always have a realistic chance at winning a NC every year (or other year for UNC).

No way if you're talking about all time top 5. It might be possible for a more current top 5 program. I don't think the top 5 programs would necessarily have the 5 most national titles either.

MSU might be a top 5 program right now, but definitely not all time. There's a huge gap between the top 6 and anyone else.

UNC
UCLA
Kansas
Indiana
Kentucky
Duke

You could argue them for 7 all time, but I think they're behind Illinois and Purdue in Big 10 win%. Granted, they have the 2 NCs, which most other schools don't. They also have numerous final fours. But they really haven't been that great in the regular season, even over the last dozen years.
