Isiah Cousins commits to OU!!!

Re: Isiah cousins commits to ou!!!

In one of the articles linked on here, Cousins says he's a pg and wants to play for a coach that will let him play his game. I believe he also averaged 16pts and 8assts per game. He might be a bit of a hybrid like Hornbeak, but it sounds like he wants to play the point. Forgive me if I misread the article! :D

The thing I love is the length and versatility the 3 guards committed bring to the court. Heild sounds like a pure 2 guard, which means OU could have a backcourt of Heild, Hornbeak and Cousins in a couple years. Sounds like a tremendous backcourt with versatility that will be able to run, defend and score. I'm just giddy over this!!!

No, you interpreted the article correctly. I think what some are saying is that players can't always follow the desires of their heart in picking a school. Coaches have to assign players to a position based on team needs and where they are the best fit.

Cousins may very well play the one at OU. I hope he proves to be the best point guard we've had in years. I would also love to see Stevie Clark in a Sooner uniform in 2013.

But the one thing I never want to see again, is an OU team struggle to score, move the ball on offense or stall out when the back up is on the floor, because we don't have more than one option at the most important position on the team.

Re: Isiah cousins commits to ou!!!

No offense, but kids don't get to pick their positions. Osby wanted to play the 3. M'Baye has said he can play the wing (but probably won't). We go through this every season, with people trying to put kids where they don't belong. Cousins is a 6'4 kid that less than a year ago, every scouting report I've seen said he needed to improve his handles. And that was being evaluated as a SG, not a PG. As a PG, he needs even better handles. There is a reason there aren't many non-elite pg's of that size. You have to be extremely athletic/gifted to pull that off. Maybe he is, but until I see it on the court at OU, I'm going to consider him a 2/3 that can handle some limited PG minutes.

Besides, he certainly isn't more of a PG then Clark or Woodson, both guys we're hoping to land. And then there is Hornbeak, who I think is a better option at pg.

Who is Woodson???

Re: Isiah cousins commits to ou!!!

Woodard. My bad.

Your bad? I thought you meant Dominic Woodson, a 6' 9" 255 stud out of Round Rock, Texas OU is recruiting. He could play any position he wants on my team. ;)

True. If he wants to play PG, I'd probably let him. LOL

Isaiah Cousins parlayed a big senior season at Mount Vernon (N.Y.) into renewed recruiting interest and cashed in Wednesday by committing to the Oklahoma Sooners.

The 6-foot-4 combo guard led the Knights to New York's Class AA title and a 23-3 record, averaging over 28 points per game and emerging as a state player of the year candidate. He was a strong consideration for the final MaxPreps Class of 2012 Top 100 released last week.

"He was coming off a mediocre summer and AAU season and he approached me and said that he realized he wasn't going to get the type of scholarship offers he was looking for," Mount Vernon head coach Bob Cimmino said. "So he worked hard. He invested so much time in not only the the weight room, but the early-morning workouts and the after-school workouts."

Cousins is the latest in a long line of prospects to emerge from Mount Vernon. Notable recent alums include Ben Gordon, Kevin Jones and Jabarie Hinds.

"His ability to handle the ball at 6-foot-4 is pretty special," Cimmino said. "He became a pretty hot property."

Cousins chose the Sooners over co-finalists Connecticut, Dayton, Virginia Tech and Xavier.

"Coach (Lon Kruger) kind of said he was going to give him the basketball," Cimmino said of OU's drawing card. "He was very impressed with Coach Kruger and I think getting away from New York was appealing to him."

Welcome Mr. Cousins!

Me gusta mucho.

After watching video of him, I really think he is a PG all the way. This is exactly the type of guard CLK had at UNLV, 6'2+ with good handles and good shot. He loves to play 2-4 of those at all times.

Not sure if this could really be classified as "the elephant in the room" but how might this affect next year's guard class? I know we have targeted the three okies plus the guy from Flower mound. Hopefully guys like Stevie Clark are just straight up competitors and welcome the competion...

Yep. Agree 100%

And he got 3 of those guys in this class alone. All 6'4" and versatile.

Love it.

I think it's kind of funny that Cousins, Hield, and Hornbeak are all listed as 6'4".

With all the guards who have already commited to us ,where does this leave us with the 2013 stud guards like Clark,Woodard,Parker?

Playing in NY probably means he is tough, and not afraid to step up to a challenge. Not many good players from NY get the soft label. Ny has produced some amazing guards, and most of them can score, and know how to get to the hoop. NY style calls for the ability to get to the hoop and make plays off the dribble.

Glad we got this kid!!! Still hoping/praying for Clark next year. That kid will be a program changer someplace.:clap:clap

Adam Finkelstein, ESPN.com's northeast recruiting editor, on Cousins.....

“Cousins best asset is his versatility. He’s a guy who could legitimately see minutes at all three perimeter positions over the course of his career. He’s the type of probable four-year prospect who should be able to fill multiple holes early in his career and then grow into a more substantial role as an upperclassman.”

That is closer to the scouting report I've been expecting to see, though it doesn't really talk about his skills, specifically. Certainly not a true PG, but capable of filling in.

Great news! Kruger is really putting a great class together. I think we will have a great future guard rotation.
