It is all about shooting

JMO, the NCAA tourney is 99 (ok maybe 92%) about shooting. In basketball, defense doesn't win, shooting does. I am a big billy tubbs fan, and agree with a statement I have heard him say 100 times, "I can't stand coaching kids that can't shoot". When he has explained that, he has stated that you can defend, rebound, not turn it over, and execute perfectly in your offense, but if the kid doesn't put it in the hole, it is all for nothing and you have just wasted a lot of energy and coaching for nothing.

In a vaccum, basketball is about shooting, shooting and shooting.

Our problem this year, and this was highlighted for me, this week when I watched a dozen schools that I hadn't seen before, is that we didn't have a reliable perimeter shooter, other than bird and he lost his shot late in the year and was a liability in the other faccets of the game. Most teams in the tournament had several reliable perimeter threats. I'm convinced that the reason you see so many upsets in the ncaa is that the big schools get great athletes, but often they are reliable shooters and the small schools end up with very skilled kids that maybe aren't as athletic, and that shooting wins out.

The irony of it all for us is that arguably, the best two three point shooters in the college game today are Clarke and Mcgee and both literally lobbied to come to ou. We didn't offer Clarke initially and then we he wanted to transfer, lon couldn't guarantee him a schollie until we heard from the NCAA or a kid transfered. Not lon's fault. I blame Blair for not transfering early enough. And McGee, well I have been talking about him since he graduated. I'll never understand it. He is, in my opinion, the best contested 3 shooter since reddick and begged to come to ou twice. Not sure what the deal is with that, but it is odd that he doesn't start for ISU.

My hope, Lon develops and finds shooters for next year.

Agree with everything in your post. I think Kruger has started to address the issue with the signing of Booker.

Butler was a 100x better shooting team than Marquette. Marquette won because their athletes played great pressure defense and penetrated and got to the free throw line. Not saying teams don't need shooters, but it is about much more than that.

Ou wanted Clarke and Willie Warren as a package deal, but there was a falling out and we ended up with only wwIII.

We wanted Clarke again when he transferred, but he was scared away by the possibility of a post season ban.

We completely missed on McGee.

Could not agree more! And you say butler has better shooters but they were outshot from the field, from 3 and from the line when Marquette beat them. It does take more than shooting but there is no substitute for it. Look at WSU. Two freshman who drilled big threes down the stretch. With Pledger and Osby gone, who scores? The freshman guards can't shoot. Mbaye inconsistent at best and Woodard is not a scoring point guard. I am don't want to overreact, but I am not excited about next year's squad. WHO will score!

Talk me off the ledge please.

Marquette is the worst shooting team from 3 out of any team in the tourney. They out shot them bc they contested the 3 well bc of better athletes.

Its 50% shooting, 50% athletes.

You need the perfect blend.

Kentucky had it last season with Doron Lamb, Darius Miller, and Kyle Wiltjer as VERY VERY consistent outside threats.

Then they had Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, Marquis Teague and MKG as spectacular athletes who could do a bit of everything.

UCONN in 2011 had great shooters in Kemba, Napier, etc,

And great athletes in Oriakhi(SP?) Jeremy Lamb and Roscoe Smith.

It takes a perfect blend, and you NEEEEEEED reliable offense from a collection of guys.

OU had ZERO reliable offense outside of Romero this season.

Hopefully next season, we can have outside shooting in Heild, Hornbeak, Booker, and maybe even Woodard?

Have great athletes in M'Baye, Clark, Bennett, and Heild (gotta put him twice ;))

Then have a steady guy like Spangler who can rebound, defend, and consistently score (I hope).

Sampson showed us that really good defense wins against the best shooting teams.

Offense should be pretty balanced next year. I'm hopeful it will be one of those situations where 7-8 guys average between 8-12 points each.
