KU team 'in limbo' still focused on taking down Oklahoma
Jayhawks likely to be without three starters against Sooners

NORMAN, Okla. — Landen Lucas understands that this is an opportunity for him.
With only three Kansas big men available for Saturday’s 3 p.m. game at Oklahoma, the 6-foot-10 forward realizes he could get extended minutes to show coach Bill Self what he can do.
Lucas, though, says that’s not his main focus heading into the top-15 matchup.
“We want to win,” Lucas said. “We’re not going there looking at the game any different. We want to win the game, and it’s just a ‘next man up’ mentality.”
KU’s bench will be thin. Perry Ellis will be out with a right knee sprain, while freshman Cliff Alexander also is likely to sit during a continued NCAA investigation into whether one of his family members received impermissible benefits.
Sophomore Wayne Selden also is questionable with a sprained ankle, meaning the Jayhawks are likely to be without three starters.
“We are kind of in limbo right now,” Self said.
That doesn’t mean the coach is treating this game like it’s unimportant.
Self was asked if he was going to give guard Frank Mason, who just topped the 1,000-minute mark for the season, some additional rest Saturday. Self answered with an emphatic no, saying Mason could take time off Sunday and Monday if he needed it.
And even though KU is likely out of the running for an NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed with six losses, Self doesn’t want to see his team drop any further than it has to.
“I do believe that if we play well from this point forward, we postured ourself to be a 2 without question,” Self said. “And then depending if things don't go well, then could we fall a line or two? Absolutely.”
The ultra-competitive Self isn't one that likes to lose in any circumstances.
Before a European exhibition trip two years ago, Self said all the right things, talking about how he was going to balance his players’ minutes while trying to get young guys experience.
A few minutes into the first game, though, Self was screaming at officials, then playing some of his starters 25-plus minutes to try to secure an exhibition win.
“We're going to go down there trying to win the game without question,” Self said of his team's OU trip.
This also could be a good time to experiment.
Because KU will be playing without a true low-post scorer, Self might have the opportunity to try out different lineups, which could include playing smaller players at the 4.
“Maybe we'll try to tweak some things,” Self said, “and have some fun with it.”
Though KU’s clinching of an outright Big 12 title might have taken some luster away from Saturday's game, forward Hunter Mickelson believed KU needed to continue to get better before the stretch run.
“We’ve accomplished one of our goals, but we’ve got a couple more on the table,” Mickelson said. “We’ll just work toward getting there.”
