He was on 107.7 today....They asked him about his recruitment out of HS...He said he was set to go to UCONN but his girlfriend got pregnant...He decided to stay in state and was set to go to OU. On his visit to OU, Kelvin Sampson sat him down and said if he comes to OU he will only play 2 minutes a game. His only choice then was to go to OSU......Odd thing to tell a recruit..

Doubt ks says you'll play 2mins unless ou didn't want him!

I could see Sampson telling him you will only play 2 minutes a game as a freshman. This would be a set up to see how badly he wants to play and wants to be at OU. If he really wanted to go to OU, then he wouldn't mind sitting most of his freshman year with possible increases in time the next year. ---- Not sure I like that strategy, but I definitely see a coach like Sampson using that.

I'm not sure that story is 100% accurate, but recruiting wasn't Sampson's best area. I think he got better at it as he went along, but he was a great defense and effort coach.

Kelvin was a little odd in recruiting. He recruited my teammate and a player off a team I coached.

I don't know if this story is true, but he did expect people to just want to go there immediately when offered.

Who were the returning starters when Atkins would have been a freshman?

To me, a guy who is disuaded by what Kelvin told him is someone who wants something handed to him and doesn't want to earn it.

There's a difference between saying "you'll get what you earn" and "you'll play 2 minutes a game." Both are honest answers, but the second one is stupid. Obviously I have no idea how the conversation went down, but if he actually said that it would be incredibly stupid.

It was only stupid if Kelvin wanted the young man on campus. If he was sincere in thinking he was not talented enough (or otherwise not a good fit) and so had no real interest in signing him, then he was doing Atkins a favor in being honest about his prospects at OU.

This part right here falsifies the story.. We all know KS called him:griffinbros

I'll elaborate on my initial post. At that time, I was following recruiting thru the Sooners Illustrated magazine. They were usually on top of things when it came to guys OU wanted to sign...and they wanted Joe Adkins. He was part of the 1996 class...OU wanted he and Desmond Mason who were both higher rated recruits than Tim Heskitt and Renzi Stone.

It turned out pretty well for OU in getting Corey Brewer and Robert Allison in that class along with Heskitt and Stone. But Adkins was a recruit they were targeting early on. I'm pretty sure he was a national top 100 player. With that said, I'm having a very difficult time believing Kelvin Sampson could say something that stupid. Kelvin could be a little cold, but he was never dumb. Instead of calling Adkins a liar, I'll just say that he probably took things out of context or "heard what he wanted to hear."

Here is a story from the daily Oklahoman that tells of Joe's recruitment by OU and OSU.

I thought at one time that Joe and Estell Laster were thought to be going to opposite schools....

And the story mentions that OU wanted him as a 2, OSU wanted him to be point.

I really don't think Joe remembers the story accurately. Too much orange Kool-Aid.
