If Joe C. throws 2 million at him does Memphis match or do they just bring in Smart for what Pastner is making? Smart makes just under 400k at VCU.

The question isn't whether Pastner will get a raise. It's when? His original five-year contract worth $4.4 million calls for a renegotiation of his salary ($880,000 annually) after the first two years. Pastner, already Conference USA's highest-paid coach, guided Memphis to a 25-10 record, a C-USA Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth in his second season.

If Joe offers 2 million then there is no way I see Memphis matching.

$1.5 should be enough, IMO.

That would give us some room to give him a raise, in the case some blue blood comes after him.

Calipari was making over 2.3 million before he accepted the Kentucky job. If Memphis really wants Pastner they have the resources to match our 2 million. Will they do it? Who knows?

This.

I dont like competing against Memphis with their little "Fedex" deal.

Yes but is Pastner really worth that kind of money, to either school?

Maybe. Maybe not.

I'd rather see OU pay to turn the program around, then go cheap and take a chance that it doesn't get turned around. And maybe Pastner isn't a sure thing, but I'd think he is closer to a sure thing then not.

Wow, I was unaware of that. Thanks for the info.

Looks like $2 mill should be the number.

Also, whoever walks into the Memphis job, should Pastner leave this season, is going to have it made for the next few seasons with the top notch talent there.

Josh Pastner is a clown.... why would you want that guy to coach OU?

I saw the original post and did some research thinking that surely they could afford more. Im aware they were paying that for a great coach however and wonder what they would be willing to shell out for someone less proven.

I would like Josh Pastner as our coach, but not for $2 million.

1.) He is 31 years old, the youngest head coach in the country.

2.) He has no track record of success. Nobody even knows anything about him, as a coach. He has never taken a struggling program, and built it back up to success. He isnt established as a coach in any way, shape, or form. He isnt really known to do anything except recruit good players to Arizona. Again, he has no track record of anything except being a good recruiting assistant.

3.) He took over a job that was probably the most well oiled machine in the country at Memphis. They destroyed that league year-in and year-out under Calipari. Nobody even had a chance at them, really. First year under Pastner, they go 10-6 and upset UTEP to make the NCAA Tournament.

He isnt ready for a big job like OU... OU needs a guy with a proven track record of success, a guy who has built up a program, who has a track record of success, who will bring an identity with him, etc. Not some 30 year old guy who has about 10 months of head coaching experience in his whole life.

Its at least 22 months, he's been there 2 years now.

Exactly. As cool stated in another thread, Pastner is Capelesque.

Capel was supposed to be a good recruiter. He landed 4 burger boys. 1 left because he was the #1 pick in the NBA draft, but the other 3 were big disappointments. We need somebody who can outcoach the coaches in this league and win with lesser talent in the event we can't recruit with the big boys.

Pastner has landed 4 five star players (according to rivals) in 2 years at Memphis. One has already transfered out (Jelan Kendrick), food for thought.
