Would it help us if we let the students sit on the side like they do rather than in the corner like we do?

No, because "the side" at LNC is 35 feet away from the court.
Students were there about 5 years ago. Wasn't great.

Yep. I love the floor seats behind the basket, they're great for student seating. Only downside (and I admit it's a big one) for the current placement of the student section is that the students above the wall don't have to stand up, but considering they stood up and cheered like crazy for the entire 2nd half of the Baylor game, ksSooner13 and myself hope we have turned a corner with regards to solving that problem.

If/when we get a new arena, I would like student seating to be like it is in Oregon's new arena, with 10 or so rows along the length of the court, and then a big section right behind the basket. Let me see if I can find a picture.

How about something like this...

I was at OU when LNC was new. One problem I had was that IMO they built it as much for concerts and tractor pulls as they did basketball games. The fans are way too far away from the court. And, Even though things have built up around it I think they should have built it somewhere on campus. When it was new it was a long ass way for the students to trek to get there - especially in bad weather. Again, JMO.

This is what I was talking about, RE: Oregon student seating. Would love for a future OU arena to have student seating like that. I know it doesn't look like a lot of students, but on Tuesday you all heard how much noise even 700 students can make, and then for bigger games you can always change some of the upper sections to student seating to make the section larger (I know of several schools that do this, including Maryland and Michigan).

You don't have to have a lot of students. AT AFH it's 4,000 out of over 16,000. The key is to get the other seats filled and have them make a difference.

It's true that the design of the LNC isn't ideal for basketball, but 90% of the problem is simply lack of support and lack of energy from the people who actually go to the games. There have been plenty of games over the years where the arena was jam packed and extremely loud. When the LNC is full and the crowd gets into the game, it is a great environment and a huge homecourt advantage.

For certain more than a decade away. Sell out LNC for half of a dozen years with a 2,000 waiting list and some consideration might be given by the administration. Then it would take another 6 years+ to raise the money and build the facility. Realistically I would expect nothing concrete for another 15 years if then.

A new facility may be a fan priority but not so for the administration. I suspect we will see Gaylord Family Memorial Stadium's seating capacity expanded before LNC will be replaced. It is what it is.
