Frankly, I don't care much for Knight or Coach K. But there is no denying that both of these guys are great coaches who know the game as well as anyone. If you haven't seen this ESPN interview with them about Motivation and Leadership, it's worth 20 minutes of your time. They touch on (without knowing it of course) some of the things OU has been going through this season.
One of my favorite parts is near the beginning of the interview, where both agreed that they had never coached a player fresh out of high school who understood how to play at the college level. They went on to discuss the learning curve all freshmen go through, and the value of having older players on the roster who can help young kids.
The best part, though, is at around the 17:00 minute mark where they talk about team defense and how the game has evolved into a selfish, individualistic form of basketball, where players are more interested in the entertainment value than playing as a team.
Be sure to watch and listen to the segment about help defense. Knight made the point that man to man defense is "team defense," where every player has a responsibility to cover his teammate's back as well as his man. Sound familiar?
There are so many things in this interview that make you go, "Man, that describes what we have been seeing this year to a tee!" No matter how you feel about Knight and/or Coach K, the interview is definitely worthwhile:
