BALTIMORE -- Tony Gallo scored 17 points and Akeem Ellis added 16 points and 10 rebounds leading Coppin State to an 80-65 victory over Cheyney in the Eagles season opener on Friday in the Physical Education Complex.

The Eagles shot 49.2 percent from the floor, including 53.1 percent in the first half, to defeat the Division II Wolves.

Gallo was 5-of-15 from the floor, but made 4-of-10 three-point attempts, while Ellis was 7-of-11 from the field.

Logan Wiens added nine points and eight rebounds for Coppin State and Jordan Lee had nine points.

Jason Sabb led all scorers with 26 points to lead Cheyney and Brandon Baylor added 19 points for the Wolves.

Coppin State (1-0) used a pair of runs in the first half to pull away from Cheyney.

Leading 20-16 with 11:25 to play in the opening half, Coppin State used a 7-0 run, highlighted by a steal and breakaway dunk by Michael Harper, to extend the lead to 27-16 with 9:53 left in the period.

The Eagles then went on an 11-2 run to take a 42-23 lead with 5:00 left in the first half. Lee and Ellis each had four points during the run, which gave the Eagles their largest lead of the first period.

Ellis gave Coppin State a 44-29 advantage at the half when he converted a layup with 19 seconds to play.

Coppin State opened the second half on a 20-7 run, which increased the lead to 64-36, which was the Eagles largest of the game.

Coppin State will return to action on Monday (Nov. 14) at Loyola (Md.) at 7:30 p.m.

BALTIMORE -- Tony Gallo scored a game-high 23 points for Coppin State, but Dylon Cormier scored 20 points leading five players in double figures as Loyola defeated the Eagles 78-68 on Monday in Reitz Arena.

Shane Walker and Erik Etherly scored 15 points each for Loyola and Robert Olson and Justin Drummond each added 10 points.

Michael Harper scored 18 points off the bench for Coppin State, while Akeem Ellis added 13 points.

Loyola used a huge rebounding advantage in overcoming a 32-31 halftime deficit. The Greyhounds collected 47 rebounds, including 18 offensive rebounds, to just 25 for Coppin State.

The Greyhounds used a 10-1 run to open the second half to assume control of the game and then held off a late Coppin State charge to post their first victory of the season.

Anthony Winbush started the rally for Loyola with a pair of free throws and Walker capped the run with a layup that gave the Greyhounds a 41-33 lead with 17:11 to play in the game.

A pair of free throws by Walker gave Loyola its largest lead of the game at 55-42 with 10:27 to play.

Trailing 68-57 with 4:51 to play, the Eagles began their comeback with two free throws by Harper.

A layup by Michael Murray and a jumper by Harper brought Coppin State to within 68-63 with 3:10 to play.

Walker briefly halted the comeback with a pair of free throws to up the lead to 70-63, but Gallo converted a layup and a free throw to trim the lead to 70-66 with 2:13 left in the game.

The teams traded layups before a Walker free throw helped Loyola close the game on a 6-0 run.

Coppin State suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 1-1 overall.
