For those still wondering, Self made clear yet again that he isn't leaving. If anything, I think he is likely to stay longer because of the stuff that has happened the past year.

Since he would eventually land at his alma mater if he left, I'm fine with him staying.

True but I wonder if he would have the passion for recruiting that it takes to get kids to Stillwater after being at Kansas for so long.

I would bet a pretty penny that Self either coaches the rest of his career at KU or ends up in the NBA down the road. Don't see him taking another college job. He has one of the three or four best jobs in America, I don't see even his alma mater being a big enough draw to leave Lawrence.

If I am an NBA GM there is NO way I take a chance on a college coach - the track record is NOT good.

Billy Donovan is evidence A for that.

Rick Pitino
Lon Kruger
Calipari

Larry Brown did OK but he may be one of the best coaches of all time.

No way Self goes to OSU unless he gets forced out at KU and wants to stick it to them.

I'm not really sure we can quantify those guys as failures. Donovan hasn't overwhelmed, but he hasn't missed the playoffs in any season, either. Calipari only coached 2 full seasons, and he went to playoffs in one of them. Had he stayed longer, and had management allowed him to draft Kobe like he wanted instead of Kittles, I imagine he would have had a very successful NBA career.

And then there's Brad Stevens -- one of the only homerun NBA hires in recent memory. I'd agree that going after a top 20 NCAA coach in hopes of him being a top 10 NBA coach seems a little silly in most circumstances, but I wouldn't shy away from somebody universally considered top 5 like Coach K (would have preferred him 5-10 years ago) or Jay Wright.
