Lamar

I think Derica plays other parts of the game well, too. I think she has a pretty high bb iq, but maybe not the confidence of Peyton nor maybe others don't expect as much from her....who knows?

I agree. She's not prone to making mistakes, defends well, and can really shoot it when she gets going.

Some general thoughts/opinions

1. Gioya appears to be struggling right now. She's going to have a hard time holding onto that starting spot. No signs of an outside shot yet.
2. Lanesia Williams looks to be the best of the 3 OKC HS guards. Wow, she has a real scoring touch. Vegas with a better mid range game? Going to be hard not to give her minutes.
3. Kaylon got in foul trouble again, but when in the game she's very impressive on offense.
4. Manning looked much more in control in game 2. Played point forward for stretches and
looked good.
5. For a stretch Sherri went with five guard/wing lineup at one point with no player over 6 feet. It worked for a while but OU got killed on the boards. I was unsure why Sherri didn't sub in Pierre Louis/Treece.
6. In the second half, Sherri did just that and the freshman bigs played very well. Pierre Louis when healthy is going to be a big time player inside. Conditioning is going to limit her right now. Treece showed a nice game as well. Lots of upside with the frosh bigs.
7. Kornet again had a nice game after being knocked to the floor. She just seems more athletic/fluid this year. First off the bench?
8. Wyatt started hot then cooled down. Minutes at SG are tough. But it's not to know Sherri will have options on the nights when Little/Carter are cold.
9. Little showed a good game.
10. Campbell again showed a nice combo of inside/outside play. The main problem is that OU does not really have a true backup to her.
11. When OU can keep Campbell/Williams in the game along with the different talent combos at guard/wing, that lineup really works.

I watched the game on 1340 in OKC on Cox. I just searched in the sports column.

Impressive stats:

Rebounds- LaNesia with 8 in 23 minutes, Treece with 7 in 10 minutes of play followed by ViVi with 6 in 8 minutes.

Assists- Gabbi and Peyton with 7 in 25 and 27 minutes respectively followed by Maddie in only 11 minutes.

Overall- LaNesia with 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals.

The announcers chose Sharane as the player of the game. I gave it to LaNesia. :)

Some really good points. Depth is the big story. Derica with her brief hot streak. She just needs to learn how to be more consistent with her excellent shots. L. Williams is a really good player who almost single handedly got her team into the playoffs last year at Northeast Academy. The backup centers both had good minutes. And Kornet and Maddie were good off the bench. Maddie looking more like herself. Wonder why she didn't play more. Hope it is not injury related or that her knees are not coming around. I would have liked for her to get some of the minutes Edwards played.

KayKay good while she could stay in the game. Campbell-Olds her normal solid game. Little looking better all the time. Ortiz still improving.

When Sherri went 5 guards we got battered. I think both Kornet and Maddie were not in the game and they just crushed us on the boards. We can't go 5 guards without our big guards in the game.

Disappointing game for Carter. May have lost her starting position. Just seems to have a hard time making her talent play. If we can get her under control I think this team will have a decent turnover year.

Defense was ragged most of the game except for a period in the second half. Too much penetration and too many open treys without a hand in the face. Didn't see much help defense. Of course you also have to give credit to Lamar. they have some offensive talent.

Good stuff.

Gioya is playing her way out of a starting job. We have started both games somewhat stagnantly, although we took a lead against Washington when they were cold early. Gioya seems to slow down the offense by making mistakes. She isn't doing what Sherri has her on the floor to do, penetrate and hit the short range jump shots or dish. LaNeisa is doing exactly what Gioya is said to be good at. LaNesia is the best we have had recently at making something happen, at least in the first two games.

Early, we were passing it around the perimeter and taking threes, which we weren't hitting. LaNesia entered, and that changed. Then, Maddie entered, and the offense exploded. Maddie penetrated and passed. Kickouts led to a bunch of threes in a hurry. It gave us open threes in the flow rather than just rising up from the perimeter because we had no other options.

I am very surprised at how fast Pierre-Louis and Treece are progressing. Now, if Vionese could just hit a free throw. McKenna is doing what I saw her doing on youtube, getting putbacks on four foot shots from just to the side of the basket. She is deadly. I wonder if they can do it in Big Twelve play.

Kay Kay had a relapse. Notice that Treece and Pierre-Louis beat her on rebounds and scored only a point or two fewer.

Carter needs to get under control. Other than that, we are finding that we have a bunch of contributors.

LaNesia was the Player of this game. Come on TV folks. She was the spark.

First off, we need 14 players with the hustle and passion of Whitney Ritchie. She flies to rebounds and loose balls with reckless abandon, plays fairly solid defense. I know she is going to get mainly mop up duty, but she is an inspiration to this team.

Poor execution in the first half. I thought we got away from the strength of this team. Penetrate, and move the defense. We settled for way too many out side shots, and did not use our bigger post play to dominate the glass. Also a weak job of blocking out on the defensive boards.

We have some really smart basketball kids. Gabi, Derica, Peyton, Maddie, LaNesia, Nicole, Vivi, and McKenna all showed high basketball IQ's tonight. I loved the fact that our two Freshman Posts take the ball to the glass without putting the ball on the floor. McKenna just stood out tonight. I hope she gets and earns more minutes. Why on earth Derica did not play last Friday is beyond me. She definitely earned her minutes tonight. LaNesia is going to be a great back up to Gabi. Love her penetration, and no fear in the lane. Talking to people around me tonight, we are really excited about the future of this team. If they can put two halves together on a consistent basis, this team is going to beat some good teams this year. I have to agree with other posters, I think Gioya may have lost her starting position. I can think of four other kids that are playing at a higher level right now and should get a chance to start. Nicole, LaNesia, Maddie, and Derica all are playing more focused basketball. I hope Gioya will work on her confidence and get back to playing to her talent and capabilities. A really good stat to look at, our three posts combined for 12-15 from the field and 17 rebounds in 31 mins. Pretty good stat for our youngsters.

We need to get as many people as possible to the Loyd Noble Friday night to honor our own Stacy Dales. I hope we pack the place and give her our love and respect she deserves.

I also felt we gave up way too many drives to the basket. I know that's not all on the bigs and it has to be stopped before it happens.

I like all the girls we have. There's nothing wrong with a little competition. Sherri has shown that she doesn't have a problem sitting someone.

Through 2; Pretty Happy

If I ramble here, which is likely as you folks know, sorry, but I'm pretty happy with what I'm seeing so far.

OVERALL

As a fan, I'm very pleased with what I've seen through two regular season games.

1. Sherri seems in a great mood. Not being sexist, but she looks like she's lost a few pounds which always makes anyone happier. To me, she seems to be deciding things a bit faster for the most part and she's trying stuff. I like all of that.

2. This team, only after 2 games, is already much better than last year's squad in every way possible and I think the gap between the two is going to widen significantly.

3. I hear a lot more communication on the floor. I see spirit and fight -- and confidence. Everyone wants to be on that floor representing and winning.

4. I am absolutely thrilled with our bigs, even Kay-Kay. Williams has played solid, good basketball, although fouls got the better of her against Lamar. The most important thing with her -- she's not missing the bunnies. They are all going in. ViVi, wow what potential. She isn't missing, she's rebounding well and I don't see her making silly freshman fouls yet. And Treece the bunnies are going in, she moves, she shoots, she rebounds, she defends. Joanna 2 and I'm elated about that. Center is not a weakness on this team. It could become one as we get into tougher games, but someone I don't think so.

5. I am beyond ecstatic with the play of our guards, with the excecption of Goya. As others have said, I think she's played herself out of a starting spot with erratic play, being out of control and stupid fouls. LaNesia takes her spot next game, I think. Thank you mother of God, no more incessant dribbling. Down fast, into our set and play fast, taking it to the hoop, constant movement. Finally, after all these years.

Ortiz - OMG! I love the way she runs this team on the floor. What a difference having a true point guard who doesn't dribble around for 20 seconds of each possession.

Little needs to shoot more, move a bit more but she is a Godsend. Seems a little streaky.

Edwards is a very solid floor leader most of the time. She still has no offensive game, but I don't worry too much about her spelling Ortiz.

LaNesia. Gosh she reminds me of D-Rob. Fast, quick. Takes the ball to the hoop. Fights, rebounds well. She can shoot. It's like she's channeling D-Rob and Sharane at the same time. What a great find, so far. She goes to the starting five next game, IMHO.

Wyatt. Love her touch. She and LaNesia really shut Lamar's #32 down after she torched us in the first 10 minutes of the game. (Sherri didn't wait to make the adjustment this game).

Guards/Forwards

Kornet is just about as infectious for the team as is Sharane. Constantly moving. More confidence in her shot. She's slowed it down a bit this year. Tough defender. Really coming into her own. That woman always has a smile on her face. She and Sharane -- team leaders deluxe.

Maddie, a step slower I think, hesitant to shoot. She's still shaking off a lot of rust. Hope she starts seeking her shot. Down low, at the point, or on the wing, she's smart. I can't wait to see what she's like at the end of the season. I do think she's lost a step, though.

Sharane. My gosh, she is the best all-around player since Courtney, I believe. What can't she do? Nothing. Please, don't get pregrnant until after graduation.

Early Season Conclusion

While it is almost all good right now, I can't wait to see how this team meshes, there are some worrisome spots.

We are hitting our layups. We are running. We are trying to play better defense each night. Everyone seems to be doing their best and working together in ways I haven't seen out of OU in years.

Trouble spots:

We aren't dominating the glass. We need to do better. Need to get more assertive inside. Muscle up. We've got in it in triplicate now; be bad girls.

I hate those cross-court lobs they've been doing this year. Bad habit to get into. During conference that lazy crap is going to get us killed. Hope it stops soon.

Sherri is doing her best to develop a two-unit system because she's got so many girls who can play great and make a difference. We haven't had that in a very, very long time. As a result, we are always fresh, excited and battling hard.

Here's what I see as the first and second units going forwar and how she's rotating/going to rotate them in until Maddie gets the rust off.

Starting:

Kay-Kay
Ortiz
Little
LaNesia
Sharane

2nd Unit:

Vivi
Kornet
Carter
Wyatt
Manning

First off bench:

Kornet
Carter
Vivi
Manning
Wyatt

We've seen the 5-guard set. Now let's see the big set, Kay-Kay, Vivi/Treece, Manning, Ortiz, Kornet, Sharane

Little is a stud! She reminds me of Hand with her passon for the game, she is also a really really good playmaker! That's a part of her game I had no idea she could do... It seems like Williams is used as the back up 2 guard mostly... She could replace Carter, or Sherri could move little to point for a few minutes and the they can both play on the floor together.

Maddie is a playmaker as well. That is why I really want her to pick up her game as our ball movement is best when she, Peyton, and Gabbi are in the lineup. Maddie looks good for a little bit then not so good for a little bit. It doesn't appear she is hurting and she has said she is 100% so not sure what is going on with her. But, when she is good, she along with the other two, really move the ball and are very aggressive. All three make good quick passes inside to the bigs as well. Just hope Maddie can turn it around quickly and be the guard we need her to be.

I think Sherri is looking at what people can do and how they fit together. Last night, I think she wanted a prolonged look at T'Ona who could end up as the odd man out. She is borderline compared to the rest of the guards.

Gabi is someone that we want on the floor, and we want her to develop into our future point guard. Right now, we score better when Maddie is running the point. Gabi spends to much time passing around the perimeter, and she hasn't learned how to get the ball inside. Maddie gets it inside with a drive or pass, and the offense operates much better if we have penetration for a layup or a kickout. I thought that was so obvious that Sherri didn't need to see it all that much.

The only reason that she wanted to see LaNesia as much as she did was to confirm what has become obvious. Our offense had difficulty with Carter on the floor. It exploded when LaNesia came in, and erupted when Maddie joined her. But, I don't know that we will see LaNesia, Maddie, and Gabi on the court together all that much. We still have Kornet, Little, and Sharane to mix into that group. Who meshes with whom will be interesting. But, I think Sherri has always wanted to use depth---if she had it. She has it.

The real dilemma is the post. Vivi can't hit free throws. But, she is a better defender, rebounder, and at establishing position than Kay Kay. She can be a force. I also think she is ahead of McKenna, but that is very difficult to tell. Treece is the type that you don't see as dominant, except that it all works. It didn't look like she was getting all those rebounds. She just did. She doesn't look like she is a dominant defender. But, she has good hand and feet coordination. Kay Kay looks the part, but we suffered on defense last year when she replaced Griffin. Kay Kay still wants to play lazy defense, using her hands.

I wonder about Gioya. Why is Sherri so impressed? She must do things in practice a lot better than she does in games. I get the impression that she decides what she wants to do. Then, she tries to do it, whether or not it is warranted at the time. She has never been a three-point shooter, but she keeps trying. Play to the circumstances, and do what you can do, not what you can't.

I think Maddie's problem is between her ears. TWO acl tears would make anybody and everybody tentative for a while. The time it takes to fix that will vary according to the individual.

I suspect that if Maddie wanted to be a scorer, she might be our leading scorer. She is pretty accurate, still two of two behind the arc. I'm not sure. Has she ever missed a three in a real game? She was one of one two years ago, two of two in the first game (exhibition?). I think Maddie is geared to be a Stacey Dales type, and she is looking to see where everyone is. She has passed up some outside shots. She seems to be looking to dish most of the time. I wonder if we'll see a different Maddie once everyone begins to define their respective roles?

She made a couple of outstanding plays that were all but impossible last night. Both cases involved a bad pass to her, one out of bounds, which she turned into assists. It's one thing to have the agility to save a turnover. It is another to be able to do something constructive with it when you save it.

Lots of good comments. My additional thoughts. Tell Gioya DON'T DRIBBLE INTO A DOUBLE TEAM. 3 turnovers in 9 minutes doesn't make up for good defense, Leadership, and hustle.
Maddie and Vivi need to keep getting limited minutes every game to help them get physical strength and mental confidence to top level.
Great depth, use it. Keep Sharane and whoever is hot on the court.
The basketball IQ and desire to play hard of this team is really good. We might be really good this year.

I liked the balanced scoring. It will make ou hard to scout this year.
