Lon Kruger to be named OU coach

Major props to Mardaddy and his friend for overhearing this info days ago and being a prophet. Don't worry dude, prophets are never accepted in their own lands.

I can't believe some of the negativity on this board. I think that one point people are overlooking is that Kruger has accomplished more with one eyebrow than most coaches do with two.

Where would you rank Kruger compared to other coaches in the Big 12? USAOsooner has him at #1, but I'd like to hear other (slightly calmer) opinions.

Probably 3rd behind the big two. Possibly 4th or 5th, but he's definitely top-5.

Hey, most of you probably don't know me, I haven't posted much over the last year...I'm not really a message board guy, and when things got rough I just couldn't take it around here...

That said, as a guy originally from San Diego, this hire reminds me an awful lot of one the Chargers made a while back: Marty Schottenheimer. Say what you will about him as an elite winner, the guy can coach and is classy and credible. No matter what happened with the Chargers after Marty left, he is what turned them from a total joke to a legitimate winner on a consistent basis.

I loved Capel and wasn't thrilled with how things played out, but if you make a change right now at OU, whoever you bring in has to quickly re-establish the program as being credible. Kruger is a big-time hoops coach in terms of X's and O's and teaching the game. If the goal for the hire is to get the program back to legitimacy, I can't think of many guys that bring better chance of a short transition period.

Anyway, just my take...

BTW, in terms of game-planning and in-game coaching, how many teams in the league will have a better coach than Kruger next year? 1?

Won 20 games as HC at Texas Pan-Am? Have you ever heard of Texas Pan-Am? Not many have. Impressive.
Took KSU to an elite 8
Took Florida to a final 4
Recruited the team at Illinois which Self took to the elite 8.
Was hired by the Atlanta Hawks for millions of dollars.
Has taken UNLV to 4 consecutive NCAA tourneys with a sweet 16 in his 1st or 2nd year.

All programs he has taken over have been in the dumps when he was named HC. He has yet to walk into a program like Calipari got at Kentucky or even like Pastner got at Memphis.

I like the hire, some wanted a younger coach, but i look for results. I hope he stays at OU long enough to win a NC. How long did Behiem coach before he got his?

All things considered, the only coach I would undeniably place ahead of him is Self.

You can make a solid case that he belongs over any other coach.

Marty is a perfect example.

He's a far better coach than Rick Barnes, Scott Drew, Frank Martin, Hoiberg, Ford, and Turgeon. Depends on who Mizzou gets, but he's probably better than him, too.

He will give Self fits.

We have to get some players first. We basically still have no size.

According to Kelvin Sampson, Jeff Capel was "a homerun hire, no....a Grand Slam" thats what he said on the animal the day Capel was hired.

I remember that interview. Seemed like he knew nothing about the guy when he said that. But he was more into his job at Indiana at the time. I remember when he said he signed something for an Indiana fan BOOMER SOONER!
