MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

We may never know this but I think a return to Drake was Overton's 2nd choice (if there was one, you know). That was my read on things. Whatever OU's pitch was, he didn't like it...it seems like.

I don't love how this staff operates (talking the portal, mostly).

Examples:

FSU F/C Cam Corhen. "Secret visit" comes out after he committed to Pitt. Why was it a secret? What fuccing purpose does the secrecy serve? Everyone can google the dude when he hits the portal. Texas kid who had an OU offer out of HS. I'm not qualified to coach high level ball but even my dumbass said, "he'd help OU", in part because he's a "local" kid. You can't publicly recruit him? You can't pry him away from Pitt? Capel shouldn't be able to beat OU for a Texas kid.

Tennessee G/F Freddie Dilione V. Like 2-3 days ago, Dilione followed Coach Moser on IG. Did he get a follow back? No. There's no way to know this but I bet Moser doesn't even personally use IG and whoever it is that does run it, hasn't logged in lately. Is that a small thing? Sure, but small things can matter. NC State wants Dilione. NC State, largely due to DJ Burns, just marched in March, so to speak. Louisville, with a newly hired (winning) coach, likes Dilione.

Coaches who don't follow portal recruits on Twitter: Moser, Gates, Jesperson, and Morris. Do they have to? I guess not but from my vantage point, most of the other big-time staffs are out there utilizing social media. Again, little things can be big things.

OU will land some kids, I'm sure, but man....things seem to be completely dysfunctional as we sit here on 4/16.
there are quite a few people on staff, and they all should be jumping back and forth from social media to youtube clips all day during the portal period. social media is a big part of this thing now, clearly. unless they are d-III, moser should follow any player back that follows him. i have no idea how good he is, but giving him a follow seems like a no brainer during these meager times. gotta say, him not being active in that atmosphere is disappointing. freakin put stoopsbros on the summer staff.

If I had to guess, PM likely will not promise starting spots.....

"Listen kid, you are going to have to earn your starting spot just like everybody else. I can't make any promises. You are currently competing against an unranked, small school freshman and an empty roster spot. For THREE starting spots. But I can't promise anything."

And?

Things can seem dysfunctional from the outside. It is all a guess though.
I can see the reason for secret visits. Kids these days are fragile. If one of our other Center targets finds out about another center visiting, it could hurt their pride and turn them off.
Yeah, it's just my opinion and that doesn't make it right.

I should have said, I can see the need to keep some things quiet, I fully understand that (applies to football as well), but this staff seems to want everything to stay hidden. I don't get why that is? Or is it just an old-school, archaic approach? Like they'd rather use their flip phones to call? I also understand a lot of this stuff is going through agents at this point. Like the Daniel Poneman dude.

If it wasn't for Trilly, we'd have very little info to work with. Some of that is due to our lack of good basketball reporting, some of it is, no doubt, due to coaches seemingly having a blockade on info. It's whatever, I guess, I just disagree with doing it all the time. I prefer to have a little fun. The example I always use in Lane Kiffin. You don't have to be that active but why not spice things up? Fans want to be excited. I think we all know there will be some swings and misses. Like Overton.

Truthfully, I use social media to track but I HATE social media, lol. But social media is GREAT for recruiting, in so many ways. Easier communication, it can be used to sell your program, etc. We should all know that by now. I see coaches all over the CBB landscape fully using it, as well as the programs themselves.

Sean Miller follows every target under the sun. Haha. Respect.

Rodney Terry sucks as a coach IMO but he gets it (or his staff helps him use it, whichever). Being social media active sure isn't hurting Texas right now.

Georgia Tech gets it.

Do I have all the answers? Of course not but I think it's safe to say when you're not winning at a high rate, when you're behind the 8 ball NIL-wise, when you have arena issues, fanbase issues (not blaming the fans fully here), etc....you should be a lot more resourceful with what you do have. You should be a lot more engaging. Create something unique and fun. If you polled the fanbase right now, I'll guess the majority would say this program seems dead-ish. That's a problem, to me.

Mentioned this kid a couple of times. He's literally one of the best shooters in all of college basketball. Will OU be able to land him? Zero chance but being included on the contact list should happen, IMO. It shows that you're working, it keeps your program's name out there, etc.

Random thoughts no one asked for...

PG Devon Barnes (Tarleton State) - 2 YOE

The more I dig into this kid, box scores from last year, the accessible youtube, Twitter highlights, etc, I don't see an SEC level starter. On the surface, he has a really good 3P%, FT %, ppg, etc....but he doesn't do much outside of that, he's small, and I truly think he'd be better served as a backup at the power 5 level or a starter at the mid major level. His best bet is to find a better mid major (Tarleton was pretty good though) or a mid major closer to GA (his home state). Say High Point, that would suit him well. If OU's thinking about bringing him in as a backup PG, fine, whatever. I'd pass if the thought is as a starter.

CG Brycen Goodine (Fairfield) - 1 YOE

The first thing that jumps out to me is his 3P% (47%). Black Rob said it best: WHOA. When I watch his youtube, I see several things....

1. He can play at the power 5 level. I have no doubts about that (he started his career at Syracuse).
2. He has the "dog" that is the first thing I want to identify. In other words, you can see he loves to hoop and he's going to compete night in, night out. Even in a highlight video, it oozes out, IMO. Hypothetically, I'd have no interest in trying to get college kids motivated. It's now a business and you're expected to compete. Find the types who have it built in.
3. He has versatility, or he's a combo guard, which would be what you want...even if you land Pedulla.

Goodine had games where he put up 37 & 40. Not bad.

Could OU do better than Goodine? Maybe but they could do a whole lot worse as well, for sure.

He just visited New Mexico. I'd be cool with OU bringing him in for a visit. If they want to, they better make it happen soon (strong Lobo lean).

SF Zach Anderson (Florida Gulf Coast) - 1 YOE

Another kid with a great 3P% (46%). However, I don't see a high level athlete. He looks more like an undersized stretch 4. If he was brought into OU as the 6th man, I would have zero complaints. He can play at the SEC level IMO but I see it as more of a bench contributor. I don't know if you could really pull off a Jalon Moore + Anderson starting lineup (depends on the team you're playing, I guess).

SF Micah Parrish (San Diego State) - 1 YOE

A mature/experienced kid with easily recognizable talent, from a winning program, who's going to play pro ball (gleague/overseas)? That works, right? Sadly, I think those same ingredients will likely price OU out of the market for Parrish. Maybe I'm wrong but a lot of top tier programs will want a kid like this on their team. Strong defender, smart, not perfect but a winning type player, for sure. We'll see, maybe OU can sneak in after he goes through the draft process.

SF Aaron Scott (North Texas) - 1 YOE

As mentioned, Aaron is the brother of OU WBB basketball player, Liz Scott. Aaron visited Memphis this past weekend and has a St. John's visit planned. Why not go after him? Would a duo of Jalon Moore and Scott work? Maybe, maybe not...but Scott is a high level defender. He's also capable shooter. He's a good player. I hope, for his sake, he stays away from Memphis, lol.

Gotta applaud this for the great info and the Black Rob reference...

He had a good career but I do not think he is a Hall of Famer though
He'll get in. It's the basketball hall of fame, not the NBA hall of fame.

His accolades suggest that he did enough (college & NBA). He didn't have immense NBA playoff success, and that sucks, but it won't be enough to disqualify him.

Other schools definitely are more forthcoming, and they also have better reporters. When fans ask the KU, WSU, and KSU beat writers who those schools are seriously targeting, the writers can generally give a handful of names, rather than just tweet a list of 50 guys. That tells me that the staffs at those schools aren't trying to treat everything like a state secret.

Passionate fanbase. They are a mess to be honest. On Trilly's discord, they are by far the most active (and insane). I wish the OU fanbase was even half that interested/engaged.
Trilly had anything new to say about the Sooners?

Not from what I've seen. I haven't been on as much today though.

@TEvans4Three ?
Nothign new from the Trilly front.

Pedulla mentioned on the Baylor forum. (no specific timeline for committing as of yest for him either)

per BU member, (In on Pedulla as of today, (maybe week's end for a commit of any player in general w/ Igor visiting)

NFL HOF is just as bad. Feels like everyone who plays more than a handful of games gets in. Baseball does it right.
Eh. Baseball is not letting the roid guys in when they put up insane numbers. Plus, they allow some players in that don't deserve to be in like Raines a few years ago.
