MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

Lehman had a good take on this a week or so ago about how much kids are missing by transferring. The days of being an alumni and associating with a university are gone
Yes, I posted about that at the time. Teddy spoke wisely and eloquently on the topic.

And a former player's association with a university and its alumni and fans can bring its own rewards, financial and otherwise. In the current setup, that's by the wayside. You'd better be smart with that NIL money because you won't have a community to turn to for support once it's gone.

They'll do interviews where they into and say "John Smith......Adidas Elite AAU" LOL
As a former coach, how does this stuff affect the locker room and team chemistry in your opinion? No way it’s all “brotherly” love, when two or three one year guys make significantly more money than the other guys on the team.

ugh. college hoops is dead to me.
Just buying success. These kids will look back on this one day and realize the money (to a certain extent) wasn't worth it.

Not to hijack thread and I see people say this, and don’t discount you/others feel this way but also believe a large chunk of alum/fans don’t care and will blindly cheer for the connection to school/state etc.

If OU was “good” at NIL, I would be totally fine with the program “buying” its success. Most of my friends who went to OU or are fans would feel similar (small sample size). Maybe the audience declines over time (especially at a program like OU that is not a top 10 all-time program) but believe that’s more tied to OU being “bad” at NIL more than the “sausage-making” process inherent in annual transfers to the highest bidder.

obviously it makes it easier to be a fan when things are good. But even if OU was getting to the tourney every year, it still wouldn't be the same. I have no connections with the roster and that is what I loved about college hoops

The constant turnover and the focus on money (on the part of the players and in the coverage of the sport) will definitely impact my interest. I hang in there because I think (hope) that things will smooth out at some point, but if the current state of play remains in place, my interest will definitely wane. I already try to avoid discussion of salaries and other financial matters in coverage of MLB, the NFL, etc. It's the last thing i want playing a major role in collegiate sports.

The evolution of college sports over the past few years doesn't have a single positive aspect, in my view. The culture has changed (relatively) overnight, and much for the worse.

Maybe the ONLY positive about NIL and the evolution of college sports is it has kept players in college longer. Oscar T. at UK was the first big name, then Drew Timme, and now Dickinson. These are all guys who would have bolted for the NBAs/pros, but now they can make more/as much in college vs. going and being a low pick or having to play overseas. Same with how it is limiting the one-and-dones. Both of those aspects are good for college basketball.

Of course, the bad news is they're rarely staying at the same school for their entire tenure.

Which leads me to the point I've been harping on for a long time. It isn't NIL that has created the mess, particularly in college basketball. It is when the NCAA started allowing penalty-free transfers, essentially creating contract-less free agency in college sports. At least in pro sports, the GM knows he has the player for a set time- not so in college.

Lots of college kids are no longer dirt poor, they can help their families come see games, and guys who would otherwise leave early for pro careers (even in minor leagues) are staying around because they can earn money from their talents (which obviously make schools tons of money). You don't have to like it, but to suggest that nothing good comes from it is looking at is from purely a self-interest perspective.

I'll be honest. I was at the small school level....we played some D1 schools every year and some D2....and even MY kids all thought they could play D1 and were better than where they were at. (Some were but most were not......there's a reason why you end up wherever you end up....although some guys get overlooked).

But if I would have had to deal with portal and NIL I would not have been able to keep a team in tact either. I'd lose 2-3 + kids every year because they thought they were better than our level. I can't imagine how bad it would be to deal with today. Even at our level kids would get all in their feels about new guys coming in trying to take a spot, etc....if money was involved forget it. LOL I can only imagine what kind of petty stuff goes on behind closed doors in today's environment. I'm sure every kid is like "if so and so is worth 400k then IM askin' for 600k".

I talked to a buddy of mine who helps kids get recruited and he said all of it is filtering down into the D2 and NAIA levels as well. On both sides....kids looking to make a buck and coaches trying to get D1 transfers at lower levels who fall through the cracks and need a place to play....said it's freezing out a lot of high school kids from finding places to play as well.

Building a team isn't easy. You have to find kids that fit your system. Not every kid does..even high level ones....they may be good players but may not fit what you do. Moser must have an idea and I don't know what it is...I'm not in on their meetings, etc. You can't just throw darts and hope for a bullseye. LOL Every coach is different in their approach to the game. My way is way different than his, etc.

And the only way around this is making the athletes employees. It is just going to be club teams and the requirement for attending the university will fall after that. I don't think there is anyway to fix this unfortunately

Anybody got estimated/educated percentage chances on the guys we’re in on? I saw Bob P said 70% pedulla 30% Garrison but it feels like that’s gone down.
