MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

Agreed. And it’s sad that it took Moser 90% into the season to start Soares over Oweh when it was pretty clear by conference time he was better.

It wasnt clear he was the better player by conference time. Oweh was putting up great numbers in the non con. There were posts talking about how we weren’t getting enough out of Soares and Darthard specifically.

During conference play, Soares flipped a switch and Oweh fell off a cliff.

Hopefully OU is really pushing the narrative of how sores and Moore were developed at OU. It doesn’t get talked about enough. For as much as oweh and Los disappointed, soares and Moore excelled

More like two guys that were sort of written off from where they came from could excel in Moser's system........something like that.
Which is fair -- Moser/the staff should get credit for that. The problem is, whether transfers or high school guys, they are about the only two we can point to. Tanner, Jacob, Noland, Los, Oweh, Bijan, JM, Yaya, etc. -- far more guys have regressed or pretty much stayed the same after arriving in Norman.

Waldo and Moore were not raw athletes who lacked basketball IQ. They were our best players. I agree that sometimes teams with great athletes struggle because they lack skill or basketball smarts, but Soares and Moore absolutely don’t fit in that category. Both those guys had very nice all around games, and they also played incredibly hard. Neither is a great ball handler, but I don’t recall either of them making a lot of “dumb” mistakes.
Waldo and Moore, but mostly Soares, were not our best basketball players November-January. We had several. JMac and Oweh as much as anyone. Waldo took a while to get going, too. Moore had flashes, but was not consistent early. And no doubt Moore is a better athlete than basketball player, and probably the same for Waldo, too.

And when the team is #251 in TOs in the NCAA, a lot of dumb mistakes for everyone on the team. Moore was #4 on the team in TOs, slightly behind Oweh, at 1.6 per game. Should be a little lower for a non-ball-handler. Soares was better, but my guess is his TO per minute was in the same range. Granted, they weren't jumping in the air passing backward like Los, or dribbling off their foot on drives like Oweh but they weren't completely innocent of mistakes. Otherwise, we would have won more games.

What I'm saying is the potential group may get off to a better start (not just record) in blending together, which could help fight through that mental wall the team(s) seem to hit in February the last couple of seasons. We need more mentally tough players- not just pure athleticism or star rankings. See @WTSooner, I'm with you on quality 3 stars!

It is entirely possible the group could be better basketball players instead of outstanding athletes. I choose not to write off the season, or roster, before they even happen.

Yeah the ONLY other way to spin it in a somewhat positive manner is to say that the staff that helped those guys develop last year was fully retained. There's no doubt (or shouldn't be) that this is Moser's last year with another sub-par season (missing the NCAA tourney). BUT if they can convince a few guys (Pedulla and Garrison) to come on board and guys that were left from last year do develop as you hope, and they make the tournament then you have some positive momentum till you hit the offseason and it all blows up for no reason again next year. :ROFLMAO:

I understand what you mean about not wanting to see OU fail. But if you have two options: (1) OU suffers through a 14-18 season and Moser gets canned and OU can start the process of undoing the damage of the past four years, or (2) OU goes 19-13, misses the tourney, but Joe keeps him -- I would opt for the short term pain. Now, I would much prefer to just make the tourney next season, but right now, I don't know how even the biggest Moser stan can be optimistic we will make the tourney. I mean, the biggest reasons for optimism coming into last season were (1) Los/Oweh returning and making a leap, and (2) the increased athleticism, which mainly was from Waldo, Moore, and Cooper. Three of those five are gone, and of the remaining two, one barely saw the floor and the other is not yet a sure thing to return (I could still see him going to the portal).
I cannot envision a world in which we miss the tournament again and Moser is back.

Which is why I find it hard to believe he’s going to keep Keita. If I were on the verge of being fired, I would want to give myself the best possible chance to succeed, and wasting a scholarship isn’t a great plan, imo.

This assumes he can find someone better to replace him

I can. As I said earlier. If the NIL money isn't available for PM to buy good players and keep them around, you can't blame him for the results.
