MBB Transfer Portal Thread: Moser Year 4

I'm being a little too negative. Or maybe I'm being realistic at this point. If NIL is a major component for a portal kid, I assume OU will lose vs most power programs.

On Jadon, honestly, OU should be able to win out vs Rutgers and/or Butler. But....A) how will the visit will go? Will he like it? B) Will it be enough to cancel a planned Butler trip? C) What is the kid's major motivation(s)? Winning? NIL? Playing time? It's likely a mix. Do Butler and/or Rutgers look more appealing than OU in it's current state? Who knows. D) Who is willing to pay him the most?

The coaches will add kids. They have to. Right? Without us being able to really track/see things, what we do know/see hasn't been good enough. Giving them an F grade is not only fair but it feels a little too high, lol. Are they waiting for the portal to close? Right now Lusk or Bob P or whoever should be providing an update telling us that 5 or more kids will be in Norman this weekend. Why not? There are, at worse, 2 starting spots open (if we call Godwin a starter). It should be 3-4 (but the coaches likely see Elvis as a starter).

I've joked about a D2 kid named Matt Becht. He's visited Richmond and is set to visit Oakland (two programs that want to win and have good HCs). He shot 45% from 3P. Can he play in the SEC? I mean, probably not, or at worst, he's Maks-esque (deep bench). But chit, waste the cost of a plane ticket and bring him to campus. Rick Pitino is putting dudes through workouts when they visit STJ, do the same for this Becht kid and/or others. You guys are mentioning jucos, same thought process really. Evaluate, get them in person, see what they have, maybe they'll luck up and find some kids like Dalton Knecht, Jack Gohlke, etc.....kids that took different, less heralded paths to become really good college players.

Point: Think outside of the damn box. The point isn't Becht himself.
100% agree

Experienced player, heck why not. Even though those numbers are a little skewed because of Miami’s injuries this year. Shot it at a pretty good clip and has some size.

There are still players that can be impact guys in the portal for us before we lose all hope, yes the perception of continually missing on targets that OU has spent time on isn't ideal. A guy like Pedulla in the grand scheme of things is replaceable, scoring guards can be had whenever wherever.

The lack of bigs is the biggest concern - are we done with Garrison ? If there was ever a guy to money whip at this point it has to be him.

A-tier name...want.
I haven't watched much of the jones kid but id assume on stats they are similar players? Watched Miami quite a bit this year to me poplar doesn't have great athleticism but he had some games from 3 where he could not miss. Worst case kick the tires and he's your 6th man.

Is OU the worst Power 5 job in the country, or is Moser just a total buffoon?

Maybe the answer is somewhere in the middle. Anyway, if we don’t get Jones locked up before he visits Butler, he gone.

At least we have more visits lined up…oh wait, that’s right, we don’t have any scheduled!

You're trying to get me fired up this morning, lol.

At this point, I see Moser as this old dude with a flip phone that is anti-social media. "Back in my day, we didn't need any of this stuff to recruit kids".

I think Coach Hump, for example, is young enough to utilize social media, and he likely gets the purpose. He used it effectively at Notre Dame. At OU, it seems like he's been muzzled. If Clayton Custer can use his IG to follow a non-stop flow of "hot women", maybe "we" can let him use it for recruiting (fully)? I don't have any issues with a young dude spreading his wings. Get your freak on (Missy Elliott) but why not both? When the coaches aren't told/allowed to use it for recruiting, or program enhancement, but they get to use it for off-the-clock activity, it paints a picture of a staff that doesn't get things or is fighting against themselves. IMO.

Some people will disagree and that's fine.

My point isn't that social media is going to necessarily cure this program's ails. My point is that it can be a very useful tool to promote the program, it's a meeting place where basketball talent is hanging out (or is accessible), and I think the benefits of using social media far outweigh the negatives.

We see it every single day with football.

The reality....Coach Venables had one really terrible year, then last season was "okay" ish, and OU's got their work cut out in SEC year 1 (o/u is at 7.5, right?). The program is in decent shape, and you'd say it's trending up, but they aren't at the mountain top right now.

But on social media, the football program is always in our faces and has to be top 5 in how they utilize it. Recruiting, NFL draft, current players, OU football history, and a variety of other usages. I mean, it's non-stop. My hand gets tired from the retweeting. Saying social media is an important tool for football would be a big understatement.

Football's usage of social media, and it's effectiveness, no doubt helps in recruiting. Anyone who'd say that's not true is really, really wrong.

As I was typing this "nonsense", Hump followed two new kids...lol. Posted above.
