Just finished watching media day press conference online. Here are a few things I took away, as the audio did not work for the first half of the presser.

1. Point guard role is still up in the air between Maddie, Gabbi, and T'ona. Sherri said Maddie sees the open floor the best, while Gabbi is good at getting everyone back on the same page very quickly without needing to take a timeout.

2. Team is more athletic than recent year teams. We will likely be able to generate more offense from our defense.

3. Offense will not look much different from previous seasons, but on defense we will look a bit different.

4. Team underperformed on the court last year. Great emphasis placed on off-season.

5. Gioya has surprised Sherri the most, but Sharane has not had one bad day of practice this summer.

While I believe Sherri can improve the offense by tweaking a few things, her defense needs an overhaul. Same for rebounding.

I can't see Maddie as the starting Point guard, I think she would be better used as a point-forward could come down to her and Campbell, one will start at the 3 and the other will be the 6th man.

I don't think Maddie will be the starting PG either.

One thing I'm wondering about is, where will the 3 point shooting come from? Sherri almost always relies greatly on getting production from BTA and I assume she expects the same this year. I hope Peyton will be a good (35% +) outside shooter but we just don't know yet.

I'm still wondering if Kornet won't start.

I like the idea of having Ortiz at the point with Manning at an off guard or forward. One passer may not be able to get the ball where they want. Rotation to a second "point guard" type can get the ball where you want it. If Pierre-Louis or Treece could be taught to anticipate the ball being delivered by penetration drives rather than bounce passes from outside, they might get the ball in better scoring position, and we might avoid a lot of stupid turnovers. The more people that we have on the floor that can drive to the basket, the better chance we have of a pass to a cutter when they try to block the drive.

In essence, Maddie, and maybe Peyton, give us a guard mentality that has enough height to rebound and enough places from which to penetrate.

Amen and amen. Sampson taught me that, even when (or especially when) the offense is having an off day, defense can save the win. We havent been very good at defense or rebounding.

I would not be suprised with a 4 guard line up. At least at the start of the season.

After watching the media day press conference, if the kids can buy into the "love" of guarding and playing defense, this team may accomplish their goals and fly under the radar to a respectable ranking and challenge for a conference championship. I am looking forward to the red/white scrimmage to see just how athletic this team really is, and see who our three point shooters may be.
