If you don't like to see players or the coach criticized, you might want to avoid the men's board for a day or two...just sayin.

That almost sounds like gloating, Norm. I don't think the men's board is any worse after a loss than the women's board is.

Why would I gloat that we got beat tonight?!?! Just pointing out that fans normally point out deficiencies and complain following a loss. Doesn't mean they are bad fans over there just as it doesn't mean there are bad fans here.

When a team arrives exhausted and twenty hours late, you might anticipate that they won't play their best game. They did pretty well, once they settled down a bit. It is unfortunate that they can't play without one team having a definitive edge. It is somewhat childish to be angry over a loss under those conditions. But, then, those are the same people that I don't want coming to this board---who only show up after a loss.

Ms and Syb (and Tango in abstentia),

You protest against natural human behavior. All mammals complain, get angry, protest, etc. infinitum when something they care about upsets, angers or makes them unhappy.

To have those feelings -- and to express them -- is an innate part of mammalian existence. It's part of our way of showing those things that are important in our lives.

Humans ***** when things don't go as they like. It's natural, just as you three ***** when other people are unhappy when the team plays bad or the coaches coach and recruit poorly and voice that unhappiness.

Why don't the three of you stop trying to be the arbitors of what is right and proper on this board and just go -- or not -- with the flow.

The team is playing poorly often this season. The coaches are sometimes coaching poorly this season. The refs stink often this season. One way or another, we all enjoy the team and the games -- even the bad ones.

On Edit: Virtually everyone who posts here has continually good things to say about the people and the program too.

There is a lot of 'natural human behavior' that people should try to limit or control. Just because it's natural human behavior doesn't mean it's a good thing.

I have no illusions that my opinion is going to change another person's behavior, But it is my opinion and as many are so fond of saying, I have a right to my opinion.

Why don't the three of you stop trying to be the arbitors of what is right and proper on this board and just go -- or not -- with the flow.

Another 'natural human behavior' is that people don't like to hear opinions contrary to their own. The paragraph above seems to imply that 'the three of you' should keep our opinions to ourselves while everyone else shouldn't. That would seem to inhibit the freedom of speech, wouldn't it?

When the men's team was struggling while the women were succeeding over the past few years, there were posters on the men's board who practically celebrated when the women would stub their toe. I would hate to see that attitude make it's way to this board.

I must have missed those posts in the men's board. I do know that several of the regulars over there visit us frequently so it seems they like to keep up with the women's team whether they post here or not.

The thing that I haven't seen over on the men's board are posters getting criticized for voicing complaints. Over here we see comments like, "you are not a good fan". Is that because they feel it is okay to say something negative about the men's team but not the women's team? Gender seems to be the determining factor but maybe there's a better explanation.

Perhaps the difference is the posters on the men's board don't see a difference of opinion as a criticism of them as a person.

Whose gender are you speaking of? The gender of the team or the gender of the poster?

The posts I spoke of happened a few years ago, not recently. Thankfully, they were a minority of the posts.

Differing opinions are great and make us all think about things perhaps we had not considered. But, that is different than calling someone a bad fan.

When I mentioned gender I was talking about the teams. I don't always know the gender of the posters.

I will admit that I need to watch what I say about players. They are doing their best so I need to appreciate the effort and be less critical of the result. I don't feel the same when it comes to coaches. I know some don't want to hear anything but praise for Sherri and her staff but I see nothing wrong with praising her when I think she does a great job or expressing my thoughts when her gameplan isn't working. That certainly doesn't mean I'm right and she's wrong. It means I simply disagree. If someone disagrees with me that's fine. That's what makes for great discussions if presented in a civil manner.

Rawr dont take timeouts into overtime use them to win in final possession of regulation rawwwwrrrr

Ms.

You know as well as everyoe else on this board does that you, Tango, Syb and a couple of others constantly take veiled (and some not so veiled) shots at anyone on this board who dares to say anything critical of Sherri and the program.

It's like the posters you disagree with or those who express a criticism are somehow not true fans and never know what we are talking about blah, blah, blah.

I want all of you to keep sharing your opinions. I value them. Some of them are even right. I don't care what you post and I don't think anyone else here does either. You don't see Norm and others (except for me) making snide remarks as a veiled attack against you guys who believe no wrong can be done by player or coach.

It's mostly just your shots and your holier than thou attitude some of you display - and that's okay too. Just don't expect me to let you get away with it.

Anyway, back to the team.

+1

But, I do find one comment to be so misdirected that it should be addressed.

I don't know exactly what the opinions of Tango and MrProud are on this issue, but the idea that I take a criticism of Sherri or the players as a personal attack is extremely inaccurate. Frankly, I have so little respect for such posts that I regard them as irrelevant, and I have more of a problem with them being associated with OU than have any concern that they might be directed at me. I don't really want OU graduates being that sexist and stupid.

Usually, the remarks about a player or coach that tend to irritate me are those that I perceive as calling their competence into question as somehow being inferior. If you say you don't like turnovers or that someone made a bad play. That's fine. If you somehow imply that you know better, or that a decent coach would know better, I find that to be absurd with a tendency toward sexism.

When someone attacks me personally, as a couple do (but they don't post often), I tend to regard it with the same affront as that of a dog who soils the rug. It's kind of difficult to take a puppy seriously.

I get the general impression that some think that because they played highschool or college ball, they know more about basketball than Sherri or the players because they were taught better in highschool. My first mentor in that arena was a coach who won two titles, and it was because his less talented players knew how to play basketball. He coached both girls and boys teams, and, frankly, his girls were better students. I suspect that he would suggest that the OU women's team is much better-coached than the men's team, and the men have an outstanding coach. But, as a general rule, women do the right types of things when taught more than boys do. This year may be an exception, but Sherri usually gets the girls ready to play. The teams that we beat to get to the Sweet Sixteen and Final Four often do not play as well together. I don't know that the people who make these comments recognize how sexist they appear.

Put me on ignore if you dislike what I post so much.

I have not seen anything that leads me to believe anyone on this board is sexist. Sexist is a term like racist. They both get thrown around erroneously often times to put down the one they disagree with and they think those terms trump whatever the other person said. You could say that Capel and Blake were fired because they are black. The truth is, they did not produce. Some can say if you say Sherri has not done a great job this year you're a sexist. Truth is, so far she has not produced as expected. It has nothing to do with whether she's a woman or man. I think everyone here agrees with me when I say I hope she turns things around and goes deep in the NCAA tourney.

I think a couple of folks have a real reading comrehension problem here. They ignore what you do say and make up stuff you didn't. If they aren't doing that, they deflect and try to change the subject.

I hardly believe critics or negative posters have taken over this board. I actually think it's pretty balanced when I consider so many of the other sites I visit.

I like to read everyone's opinion and posts. I just don't like people with their noses turned up acting like they are somehow better than everyone else here just because they've made the choice to kiss someone else's fanny.

As a seventy-year old white guy, it took me a while to learn what some of these things were. I do regard the response to Blake and Capel as somewhat racist. Perhaps, they were not the best coaches at the time. But, the antagonism, hatred, and contempt that people have shown for them is curious. We have had some pretty lousy white male coaches, but only a couple have been castigated strongly, and none have become the symbols of hatred that Blake and Capel have become. Why those two?

A lot of times, the reason that we don't see things as racist or sexist is that we don't think of ourselves as racist or sexist. Yet, when I look back over my life, I have said some things that I am quite ashamed of upon reflection. At the time, I didn't see them as racist or sexist. Looking though the eyes of others sometimes teaches you.

When you challenge Sherri by suggesting that she doesn't understand something or is ignorant of something, why would you say that? She is regarded as one of the most avid students of the game nationally. What does it imply when you question whether she knows what is obvious to anyone who ever heard the most incompetent highschool coach? Of course, she knows. She knows exactly what she is doing. It has worked for a long time, and she has the respect of her peers, the best of the college coaches.

I often wonder why something isn't working, but I am not so stupid as to think Sherri doesn't know the importance of something better than I. The best coaches that OU has ever had on the men's team have never done as well as Sherri. Three Final Fours? Who has done that? Do you question whether they know?

Umm, I can remember Dave Bliss and he wasn't getting an ounce of love or respect when he left here and he didn't deserve it (as history shows us clearly).

Capel, except for landing Blake and Taylor Griffin, was a terrible coach and he had even less of a sense of what a good player was (see Tiny Gallon).

Sampson -- his slow down style simply didn't fit any longer. The program was on the downward spiral when he was fired and he'd been sanctioned at least once by the NCAA for knowingly breaking the rules. People got tired of losing with him. Donors also were fed up with his crap and his behavior.

I don't think racism played a part in the departure of either one. Not one iota.
