Mizzou to SEC effective July 1, 2012

Does this mean we will no longer be privileged enough to read Sawyer's 3,000 word dissertations? Damn.

Boca, I've asked before but never saw an answer. What does the SEC gain by adding a "warm body" to what has been the most profitable conference?

MU's athletic department has made huge strides in the athletic arms race in the 14 years since Alden took over for Castiglione. What the SEC move does is force us to speed that up even more.

I'll also remind you guys that this is a basketball forum, and the SEC does play more sports than just football.

They took A&M because it gives them Texas markets. They took Missouri becasue they needed to balance the league. Missouri does offer some potential TV markets but the school itself (with the exception of its journalism department, per Missouri people) is average with a joke of an athletic department.

I hope I never see anyone mocking MU's School of Journalism again...

They are not mocking the school of Journalism, they are mocking you. Perhaps you need to apply for a tuition refund given you can't see that.

I like how you ignore Earth and Energy and Meteorology.

Not trying to ignore it. I was really just curious when I asked. Dance was not exactly the type of reply I was expecting. It wasn't the only response... just the one that happened to stand out.

Mizzou is in the Big 12 for nearly nine more months...

They didn't have to take anyone. They could've stayed at 12, or they could've added just A&M and stayed at 13 (the Big 10 made 11 work for two decades). They could've had any Big East school and many ACC schools. MU wasn't just a throw-in for the hell of it. They had no shortage of options.

I'll assume you're either not an OU alum (or not a particularly proud one) based on your point of view regarding academics. Missouri is ranked higher than Oklahoma as an overall university on pretty much every list I've ever seen.

If I defined athletic success by championships in a single sport, I'd consider MU's department a joke, as well. I take a more comprehensive view, though.

They are not mocking the school of Journalism, they are mocking you. Perhaps you need to apply for a tuition refund given you can't see that.

Mocking me for what, exactly? Explain it to me since I obviously don't get the joke.

If you insist on trying to mock my intelligence, though, at least do it in complete sentences.

Seeing kansas with a reported $11 million edge in athletic budget doesn't really hurt considering what they actually spend it on and what they get out of it. Half that money goes to bloated administrative salaries.

I'm hesitant to bash any school at this juncture for not wanting to be a part of the Big 12 as I think that a majority of OU fans were hoping to go to a new conference [PAC-12] not even two months ago.

I still think that the B12 is a solid conference with the loss of Mizzou and the addition of WVU cancelling each other out [except geographically], but losing aTm and getting TCU is not that great of a trade.

Missouri will get destroyed in SEC maybe 1 or 2 wins like with Colorado in the pac 12 they are like 0-6 in pac 12 play

#90 as compared to #101 is such a wide gap! As being pretty much the only D1 school in a state of 6 million people versus a state with 3.8 million and two major universities is really disappointing by any standards! With the population and resources of MissU, they should be in the Top 20 of all universities, not #90! It still amazes me why the almighty Big 10 wasn't interested in MissU when the school would have done ANYTHING to join that group. With the progress OU has made academically, get back to us in 5/10 years we'll see who's ranked higher academically.

KU got a helluva lot more conference championships to show for their money spent than MissU. It's mindboggling that a state with 6 million residents and ONE major university can only wring out SEVEN conference championships in 15 years! That's pretty poor by any measurements. Even Iowa State and Baylor were more successful than that!

MU alums and their defense of their "journalism program" is just damned cute.

This realignment saga has literally brought the worst out of every one. Nothing like fellow midwestern/great plains universities ripping on each other.

if you visit texags (it's a good laugh, nothing much else) they have really, really been scrambling to find ways that the Big 12 is inferior and how superior the SEC is/will be with them and mizzou.

I have tried visiting mizzou boards, but they all suck... they were averaging about an sec thread a day though for a month. Basically ever since tanking against Arizona State and their season sucking ever since, A&M win aside :D

SEC chants: What mediocre, unranked football program fans chant when they are mediocre and unranked (see: mizzou and texas a&m)

zzzzzz

Nobody cares. As Boren said the Big XII is in it's best position since it's founding. A stronger schedule with great teams, great media contracts, etc.

This story is over. Please move this to the smack talk board. Missouri's day in the sun is over. Back to them being ignored like they have for the past century.

Sawyer, I hope this helps you comprehend the mocking comment. I am pretty confident the vast majority get it. I do assure you we are all trying to type slowly when we communicate with you.

Regardless, I will try to explain it in slightly more detail. You are on an OU basketball message board. The topic being discussed is OU basketball with two slightly broader subjects of all things OU and the Big XII conference. Very few people , if anyone (with the possible exception of you) has come to this forum to discuss the relative strengths of the various degree programs at the Big XII Universities. Most don't know which school has the best journalism program and quite frankly don't care. A Missouri fan bringing up the strengths of Missouri as an academic institution on a sports message board is just ridiculous. OU fans have brought it up because the Missouri leadership chose to make it part of the reallignment discussion. A confident and intelligent Missouri fan discussing this issue with fans from another conference would let it go and not defend the aburd notion that Missouri is a better academic school that its peers in the Big XII. At the same time, I would expect a group of Missouri alumni to agree privately that Missouri is superior to its Big XII peers. The reality is that both OU and Missouri are above average universities when compared to all colleges in the United States. Niether OU nor Missouri is widely considered an outstanding academic institution by people that did not attend those schools. They simply are not the same as the Ivy League, Stanford, the military academies and a select few other schools.

Finally with respect to your comment that you are going to assume I don't have a degree from OU, that would be an incorrect assumption. I actually have two degrees from OU. I will also let you in on a little secret, the majority of people on this forum have a degree (or degrees) or are currently working on a degree from the University of Oklahoma. The reason they have an above average interest in OU sports is because they went to OU or are currently going to OU. Once again, I would recommend applying for a tuition refund because you seem to lack strong logical reasoning skills.
