as a dad who's kids had the opportunity to play college sports, it's a dog eat dog world. Maybe some of you played...how long ago?
Daughter - walked on at a D1 Juco for basketball, coach welcomed her with open arms...let's say it didn't go well. Course I knew at the time she wouldn't play a second and would be used as motivation. (as a parent how do you tell your daughter she isn't good...it sucked) I did warn her of VERY limited PT if any and the motivation.
She then walked on to KU's row team. She made it...she was so excited. She was the last of the walk-on's but again coaches lauded her effort and team support. Unfortunately she chose to quit about March this spring, she had to choose between work and being on the "practice" team.
Son - played D1 Juco baseball for 2 teams in KS. Both times the coaches that recruited him left before he got there. Arm injury pushed the decision to stop playing.
Just saying...recruiting, playing, the work, all those things are a different tiger.
I'm a little frustrated at the direction of the women's team over the last few years...after being on the rise. Hopefully things can turn around.
When my daughters were in high school (late 1980's) their high school coaches used to tell guys who felt they wanted to pursue athletic scholarships that they should only think of playing college ball if they had absolutely no other way to go to college or they were good enough to eventually go pro. They said it was nothing like playing in high school and unless they absolutely lived and breathed their sport they would be miserable.
