Mulkey Transferring

as a dad who's kids had the opportunity to play college sports, it's a dog eat dog world. Maybe some of you played...how long ago?

Daughter - walked on at a D1 Juco for basketball, coach welcomed her with open arms...let's say it didn't go well. Course I knew at the time she wouldn't play a second and would be used as motivation. (as a parent how do you tell your daughter she isn't good...it sucked) I did warn her of VERY limited PT if any and the motivation.

She then walked on to KU's row team. She made it...she was so excited. She was the last of the walk-on's but again coaches lauded her effort and team support. Unfortunately she chose to quit about March this spring, she had to choose between work and being on the "practice" team.

Son - played D1 Juco baseball for 2 teams in KS. Both times the coaches that recruited him left before he got there. Arm injury pushed the decision to stop playing.

Just saying...recruiting, playing, the work, all those things are a different tiger.

I'm a little frustrated at the direction of the women's team over the last few years...after being on the rise. Hopefully things can turn around.

When my daughters were in high school (late 1980's) their high school coaches used to tell guys who felt they wanted to pursue athletic scholarships that they should only think of playing college ball if they had absolutely no other way to go to college or they were good enough to eventually go pro. They said it was nothing like playing in high school and unless they absolutely lived and breathed their sport they would be miserable.

When Hale does say something positive, it is unique. It is also unique when he contacts all sources with regards to the women's programs.

Yep Hale only has a weekly show with Sherri. Moreover he has rented space under her cabana to get closer to the inside stories.:)

As I said before Sherri Coale better days are behind her, we all can blame the players, the fans, and baylor but it falls on SC. I'm not sure we've seen the end of this yet.
James Hales's better days are behind him too. He will spout the company line every time. He has to, or he loses his lifeline to the coaches.

No fair posting facts!

Typical grasp of the circumstances. Rbeam1 post his opinion of the facts that Hale supposedly posted and you declare he is posting facts. Apparently the facts are out there but until they become public and we all see them we are dealing with speculation or hearsay.

The way some on this board read and comprehend Jame Hale may well have expressed an opinion in his statement on the transfers and others are purporting it to be fact. Definitely would be consistent with the Syb's M.O. Meanwhile we just have to wait until all the facts become public, if they ever do.

I think the only time I held a coach 100% responsible for a player leaving or choosing to go elsewhere was when Schnellenberger knocked the eldest Lockett's hat off.

When being recruited, players are on their best behavior and do their best to convince a coach they are exactly what is needed, mentally as well as physically. If coaches could read minds and predict the future all teams would have perfect rosters. Sherry couldn't predict what these two would do and Kruger couldn't predict what the point guard commitment who ended up at Oregon would do. It's an inexact science.

I think you're being too easy on the coach. It's her job to evaluate the recruits. They had been recruited for how many years???

And if both had been riding the pine and decided to leave, I could understand. But that's not the case here.

And I have no idea why either decided to leave, but it does affect the team. Sherri's team.

Hale probably does the best job in the area at doing what he is hired to do. But he is hired and obligated to see things from a biased perspective. Can't blame him for doing his job. But you do have to filter his information to get nothing but the pure truth. He is a recruiting guru and sports commentator and has never made any attempt to be a journalist.

Let's see. Other than the fact that Hale admits that his interest is in football, and he only occasionally pays attention to basketball doesn't fit your case. Does it?

You won't hear me roast you, 8693...I agree completely.
I wish no ill on the young woman and hope she moves on to a happier place, but in my eyes, Nancy Mulkey never looked like more than a project. Yes,we only saw her one year, and indeed, she arrived in Norman with accolades and honors and was a legit 6'9", but she seemed woefully low on basketball IQ and skill. Her footwork and positioning down low were slow and with her slight frame she was easily pushed off the block. She seemed to labor while running the court--was this a lack of conditioning or was it a deficit in desire? She altered shots, that 's a fact, and showed flashes of promise, even winning a Freshman of the Week honor. Yet those skills didn't seem consistent nor did they grow. 8693 could be on to something that her teammates weren't coached to ge the ball into Nancy up high. And maybe she learned that D1 ball was way more work than she expected.
And perhaps I'm selling her way short--I never met the young lady.
All I know is that she was a long way from becoming a force on the court for OU, and now she has left the LNC. Honestly, I wish her success down the road--maybe closer to Houston.

And the prospects for 2017-18 OU WBB just grew darker...
Perhaps some talented post prospect now realizes she can play immediately and will announce her commitment to the Crimson and Cream...

The question I've asked is how can a girl that tall not come into college with some sort of low post game. It's not like she grew a foot in a year. She would have benefitted from using last summer, a redshirt year, and next summer adding weight, strength, as well as skills. At the size she is now every game would have been like the KSU game I attended where she got backed as far down under the basket as they pleased.

I disagree with those that feel Dungee would not have mattered. IMO there were times when she was as good as anyone on the court. I only saw her improving and being an important part of the squad.

No one said that Hale's focus is on WBB. The statement was that he has a weekly show with Sherri, he attends every home game, I know I see him at every game and that he is as informed on OU WBB as any member of the media.

His attention toward WBB is about on par with Joe Castiglione relative time commitment and much higher than most of his media contemporaries.

Can you name one sports media person that give more attention to OU WBB than James Hale? I know he may not meet your standards as to what he should do regarding WBB. But who was the first media person to provide you information why Mulkey and Dungee may have left the program? Was it Dean Blevins? Was it Toby Rowland? In case you forgot you referenced him in an earlier post on this thread.

Surely you did not go to Hale's premium website looking for the latest football recruiting info? I don't know but I suspect that the information you acquired from James Hale was also available from Kyle Phillips with the Norman Transcript. Here is a tip James also has a regular show with Patty Gasso, Lon Kruger, K.J. Kindler, Mark Williams and Pete Hughes that I frequently listen to.

Guess what? Many of us on this board have their primary interest on football not WBB too. I know I do and I know about a half dozen others that on occasion post here whose interest in WBB is only a casual fans' interest but follow the football team extensively. Don't forget you are the one trying to force all the round holes to fit your square peg. Got to be exasperating for you.

I put WBB at #4 on my OU sports agenda and I regularly attend OU sporting events in 11 sports, have season tickets to 8 and make a couple other sport on rare occasions.

Sorry, but when I have asked Hale to extend his coverage of women's basketball and recruiting, he has specifically indicated that it isn't what pays his bills. It is not a focus, and he doesn't spend a lot of time, or apparently, interest in it. Maybe once at some point during a recruiting season, he will generate a post that has some recruiting information in it.

I was pleasantly surprised when Hale did a story on the transfers, Dungee and Mulkey, with some comments regarding Dalton. He had researched his story, giving it more time than usual, and presented solid information.

Can you share that story Syb? It is something that if facts are supported would be important to know.

As I stated earlier, I don't feel comfortable citing information from a paid board, at least for a period of time. It is how these people make their living, charging for access to information.

It is actually quite useful information, and Hale did what appears to be a thorough job researching the situation. A part of it is similar to the Norman Transcript article. But, the Hale story goes very specifically into the individual cases of Mulkey, Dungee, and, to some extent, Dalton. It might be worth paying $7 or 8 for a month's membership. I just don't feel comfortable revealing it. There are others on this board who have read it, and, apparently, they feel similarly since none have discussed it.

Logical and makes good business sense on his part to not devote more time than he is as his job is to make a living. But his statement to you was that he was not going to expand coverage for financial reasons not that he was not going to devote any of his time to WBB. It is the reality of the world. Get the biggest bang for the buck. OU minor sports do take and always will take a back seat to football and MBB. Women's sports don't get the coverage of men's sports as the demand is not there nor will soon be.

But comparatively speaking Hale devotes more time to all of OU's minor sports than his competition. For that he should be commended not demeaned. I'd be happy if he would just stop saying "but anyway" so damn much.

Perhaps the solution to all these young whippersnappers thinking they are the center of the universe is a mandatory 1 year of military service followed by a year of public community service of their choice. It would give them a sense of responsibility and commitment that is absent today.

Today's culture want to coddle these kids from the cradle until they get their first entitlement check. :D Just out trolling!

Were you drafted?

It is the "everybody get's a trophy" culture.
