Wow, even the view through my crimson-colored glasses wouldn't give us the 4th best odds with a new coach and new roster of mostly non-P5 experienced players.

I am all in on Porter Moser and what he can do for our program but this is optimistic IMO. I agree we are competing for the 5 spot but thought maybe OSU or WVa would be ahead of us. Maybe Vegas is thinking of Moser's tournament runs. At least it's nice to see some positive vibes around basketball.

I agree with the optimism when it comes to our team. Only thing I would quibble with ... I think Kansas has the deepest roster even if we add Shackelford. I think KU and Baylor are the teams to beat but am bullish on our team.

You weren't asking me but I'll respond: You never know how a bunch of new players (and that's mostly what we have) will mesh, especially under a new head coach. I'm very hopeful for the upcoming season and can't wait for it to start, but I'm not inclined to predict great things -- I'm just waiting to see how it all plays out. (But then this is my approach to most seasons -- I'm not much of a prognosticator, generally speaking.)

Curious why? We have a ton of talent.

We have a deep roster of players that can contribute, but I don't see much star-power. I'd be very surprised if anybody was first or second team all-conference, and we certainly don't have any All-American candidates. Teams can certainly play at a high-level without stars, but those are typically teams with years of experience playing together. From top to bottom, this coaching staff and roster are almost entirely new.

Baylor won't be one of the two best teams in the country like they were all last season, but they won't be too far down. KU added a ton. Also, they were the undisputed number one team in the country and the betting favorite to win it all heading into the postseason in 2020 -- not sure how that is anything other than scary.

And anytime you ahve a roster overhaul, you don't know how it will come together. And add in a new coach. There are just too many unknowns.

And lastly, There have been numerous times in the last decade that I have been really excited going into the season and thought we would have a shot at being in the top 3 of the conference...most of the time I end up being disappointed.

I’m usually pretty reasonable in my predictions and have been reasonable here. We have the key components of a basketball team that can compete at the top of the league. Not win the league, but we’ll compete:

Experience - 8 division 1 starters
Maturity - lots of upperclassmen
Depth - 10 guys physically ready to play in the league
Gritty guards
Quickness
Shooting and versatility on the bench

What do we lack?
Chemistry
roles
some guard scoring punch in our starting lineup
A little length
Front court athleticism
An answer at the 4

I’m confident Moser will get the first two worked out. Shackelford solves the 3rd. We’ll be a good team with a chance to be super annoying to the really good teams.

This is one of the few benefits of the transfer portal & immediate eligibility. A new coach can come in almost right away & construct the roster to fit what he wants to do.

LK wanted spacing, 2-3 guys who are good 1v1, 2-3 shooters, & an athletic 5. Offense is tailored around mismatches & angles.

PM wants ball movers, guys who execute sets, slower tempo, and a very skilled 5 to run through.

Normally it would take a coach 3 years to construct his type of roster with that big of a change, now it takes 3 months.

What Big 12 teams don't have major roster/coaching turnover? That is simply the way things are now with COVID and the Portal. KU and Baylor both with a lot of new faces. UT and TT with new coaches and considerable player turnover. OSU loses the #1 pick in the NBA draft.
