I’m curious how many times we have been ranked top 25 post-valentines day in the past 20 years or so. Off the top of my head I think there were 2 years w BG, 1 w Trae, and 2 w Buddy.

I am setting the o/u at 1.5 for all other seasons (not including this year). The date is somewhat arbitrary but the regular season is almost over.

Five of Lon's 10 years, one year under Capel, and each of Kelvin's final two seasons.

this is the AP poll
Also ranked this exact week in 2017 (2/12-2/18).

Things have not been nearly so dire as you thought. Since the year 2000, we've been ranked after Valentine's Day 12 times:

2000
2001
2002
2003
2005
2006
2009
2014
2015
2016
2018
2021

My list came from soonerstats.com--not sure which poll is used there.

0-1-2-3-_-5-6-_-_-9-_-_-_-_-14-15-16-_-18-_-_-21-_-_-24 … its the spaces that sting lol. Ranked every 3 years hopefully ends this year and starts another string of good times.

Removing Sampson and Trae, bg, buddy then it is a total of 2. That is about what I thought hence the o/u of 1.5

I will also add that ranked is not the end all be all ..

08 for instance OU was a 6 seed and was pretty much always relevant .. and was not ranked all year long

Correct! And 06 was almost the opposite: around the top ten all year but was less than the sum of its parts. Rewarded with a 6-seed and got smoked with the remainder of Bruce Pearl's Milwaukee work.

I'm in the minority; I don't care much about the rankings. But I've been in enough arguments around here over the years to know that it matters A LOT to a big chunk of our posters.

OK. It's a strange result you were seeking, though. Plenty of strong programs would look less so if you ignored the results they achieved with three of their best players (who didn't play together) and tossed out the success of their best coach over that span.

it also mattered a ton back in the day because top 25 meant you were on SportsCenter highlights .... that is way less of a deal now .. with streaming and social media

I care about them mostly because of the status and cachet that accompanies being ranked. It impacts the coverage you receive in the media and can also have an effect on how you're perceived by recruits. Every little bit helps. It means something that we were in the top 25 in the all-time AP ranking. It's something to brag about to, to impress recruits and the media.

More just curious than “seeking some strange result”.

That team's issue was that they got smoked in most their games against good teams. And losing to SFA early probably cost them a spot in the polls at some point.
