LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas will be without two talented freshmen this season.

Coach Bill Self said Friday that Ben McLemore and Jamari Traylor have been declared partial qualifiers by the NCAA and will not be eligible to play this season. They cannot practice until after the fall semester.

McLemore, a 6-foot-5 guard, finished his prep career at Christian Life Center in Texas after his suburban St. Louis high school closed following the 2009-10 season. Traylor attended Julian High School in Chicago before going to the IMG Academy in Florida.

The NCAA has also ruled that Kansas freshman Braeden Anderson was a partial qualifier.

Kansas won the Big 12 title last season but lost Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris, Josh Selby and several other contributors.

Can someone explain to me why they're eligible to practice after the first semester? The Big 12 doesn't allow partial qualifiers. That's why Tony Mitchell is at North Texas right now and not Mizzou.

Maybe that rule doesn't apply to KU. Would you be surprised if the Jayhawks received preferential treatment from the Big 12, NCAA or any other basketball governing body you want to name? I sure wouldn't.

it's weird that no one is explaining this clearly (jfc, sports media people suck at their jobs). the only thing i've seen that makes any sort of sense was that there is some sort of appeals process to a faculty board from all big 12 institutions, and that the ku players won their appeal to allow them to receive financial aid this year while attending ku.

it isn't technically accurate (afaik) to state that the big 12 doesn't allow partial qualifiers. the big 12 allows partial qualifiers to attend, and begin to participate during the 2nd year, provided they demonstrate adequate academic progress in their first year. they just don't allow partial qualifiers to receive financial aid during that first year.

i mean they normally don't. obviously there is some sort of loophole.

Why does KU have so much thugery in their program, but never get in trouble with the NCAA? They are probably the only program that can get away with signing the kid from Ardmore.

If they came in for the summer semester would that make them on campus for 2 semesters after the fall session and thus eligible to practice in January?
