Gileysa Penzo (5-10 SG Montverde, FL/Montverde Academy 2014) commits to Oklahoma @CGBR27 @espnW
She is Puerto Rican. Played on Puerto Rican National Team

I'm trying to understand this move but honestly, it makes no sense.

One thing does seem to make sense. She was at the same tournament (FIBA) as Chelsea Dungee, Lauren Cox, Asia Durr, and Katie Samuelson, and she was first team All-Tournament, may have been the top vote getter, listed first over Durr and Cox.

Spoke with someone who's seen her play
She's a scoring Combo guard and an Outstanding passer.
She will most likely take over the Scoring Guard position
When Aaryn Graduates.

It also seems that she rebounds and plays defense. Some have her at 5-11. It looks like she was the leading rebounder for Puerto Rico. Also led in steals.

The issue is not with Gileysa Penzo's talent. I'm sure she's an excellent recruit.

Unless there is some roster attrition that has not been announced, OU is overloaded at 1-2 -3 slots (presuming she can play some 3).

It's the roster imbalance right now.
The roster for 2014 has 10 guards, no centers, 3 forwards. So basically zero front court depth at all.

That's not an opinion. That's a fact. You can project all you want Manning playing the 4 but Sherri calls her a guard.

I'll wait for signing day to see the full class before passing along real criticism (yes you can critique Sherri and still be a big fan. The two thoughts are not mutual exclusive).
But right now, the 2014 class makes zero sense based on what OU really needs.
You can understand grabbing Ortiz due to her projected talent level but two other guards?
It's like the football team signing 7 Wrs and no OL.
Based on transfers, the last three classes (including 2014) have been screaming for a center.
Yet no center has been signed.

Please enlighten us how this makes sense.

It obviously makes sense to the coach and staff. How can that not be good enough for you? Given our coach's track record,we are obligated to an initial acceptance. The season will show us how the parts all fit together

Our maybe Boren mandated this hiring because the girl is a third cousin of Weitzenhoffer........who knows, now a days?

Once again, I will make the point that Notre Dame beat UConn about six times in a row without having a center. They had something like eight guards, four forwards, nobody over 6-2, and were the best team in the nation for most of the year, unless you include Baylor.

Since there are so many posts that are on the top 150 who don't seem to be getting a lot of interest, you have to wonder if coaches aren't becoming aware that you need talent more than size distribution. Which is preferable: a scorer who is 5-10 and can rebound or a 6-4 post who may not have movement, hands, or any real talent? There are a lot of players in the 5-7 to 6-1 range that are athletes. Taller than that---not many?

Syb,
Look at ND's current roster.
It has 5 forwards/1 center (4 6-3 or taller) and 7 guards.
Can you please retire this outdated argument.
ND added 3 post players to balance out their roster.

Why?? because McGraw knew she needed more athletic height players that her roster
was imbalanced.

Once again the blind faith and follower mentalities shine thru for Tangled, Sybawrong and MPS..... "In :sherri175_jpg_xs: we trust" I guess. I'm all about bringing in talent, but we need bigs!

It's hardly blind faith - we've seen Coach Coale's results. We've not seen any of your results however, so your opinions might carry somewhat less weight. Again, I'll proudly say I'm a fan, not a critic, but that doesn't mean my take on the game is not accurate.

Not only do we need bigs but, this all but slams the door on Danni Williams (one of the top guards in the country) and Brooke Alexander, both of whom wanted OU to offer.

I wonder how many of the 2013 and 2014 will be gone in a couple of years.

I cannot speak for the talent of Ms. Penzo as she may be the difference maker that Norm references as a must have to be a serious national contender. However unless she projects to be that type of talent once again Sherri focus on quality and type of talent continues to follow that of her past and altantasooner will have hit the nail on the head in his assessment.

Sherri seldom has both the quality and quantity of talent on campus commensurate to what a top 8 program should have. Hence Penzo' commitment is probably consistent with Sherri's track record when recruiting players. Short of the needs necessary to achieve her and her fans team goals.
