New softball thread

It doesn't get much easier until a team gets to 2-0 in the regional. Then it's one win in two games to advance.

A&M now needs to win 3 in a row to advance.

Well, A&M is now in the same boat as Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, and South Carolina. The next loss is go-home time.

I'll bet that the Aggie coach is second-guessing his decision to pull his starting pitcher in the 7th inning...

Whoever seeded these teams didn't look at the fielding stats.
LSU #134
A&M #61
Florida State #113 (ACC teams seeded 8th?))
Tennessee #114
Arizona #150
Georgia #156
Missouri #163

You lose games when you have no defense. A&M had two unearned runs. Should have had more.

About the bad calls by the umpires:

We caught a really big break when the first base ump called the A&M runner out on that bunt that Paige fielded in the top of the seventh. I was almost certain she was safe, and the replay confirmed it. While I believe it's likely that we would have gotten out of the inning without the Aggies scoring, I can certainly understand why A&M might feel otherwise.

On the other hand, we got shafted on that "strikeout that wasn't" by Paige earlier in the game. Instead of having to grab some pine, the A&M batter got another pitch and promptly sent it over the outfield wall.

Guess the bad calls evened out.

Arizona State beat LSU, 1-0. ASU has eliminated LSU five times in the past thirteen years. Will this be the sixth?

Lauren gets us closer with #92. 4-3. After two.

LSU might have been a 5 seed a month ago but they did not deserve a 5 seed at tourney time. They are 7-8 in their last 15 games and 5 of those 8 losses were at home. They clearly peaked in March not May.

I think James Madison (#15) is the first seed out. LSU (#5) barely survived after losing 1-0 to Arizona State, they needed ten innings to beat Nebraska, 3-2. They only scored one run in the tournament prior to the tenth inning. Georgia barely beat North Carolina to get into the finals against Western Kentucky who beat them earlier.

We get A&M again. It looks like Missouri will get Kansas again unless Indiana State can score two runs in two innings, trailing 0-2 after five. Texas is tied in extra innings against San Diego State.

Unfortunately, it looks like we will be playing in Tuscaloosa. OT: Actually, had no idea what city University of Alabama was located until this tournament. Serious deficiency in knowledge of universities. Geography, too.
Sad admission. SMH

Does anyone know what the status of the Lehigh-A&M game is?

The NCAA website has A&M playing OU at 2:30 today, and the gametracker for the early game lists the 7-5 OU final over A&M instead of the current game.

I've tried several different places with no luck. Even ESPN lists A&M as beating Lehigh 7-5 yesterday, and the stats list the OU lineup under A&M's name. Pretty pathetic, huh?

Nevermind on my last reply, NCAA finally fixed their screwup.

A&M still leads 4-0 in the bottom of the 5th.

I am watching the stats but would love to hear comments from people actually watching the game on espn3, if you would want to share. Thanks.

Four comments:

1. Great win!!!

2. Ellis made a great play on a bunt in the 3rd inning. I played catcher and I can attest she made a tough play look routine. She is a great defensive catcher.

3. With runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, I didn't understand why we didn't bunt the runners over to 2nd and 3rd (yes, I know someone will remind me that we should never disagree with a coach).

4. We have to get the bats hot if we are going to have a chance of winning the super regional.

It may be a blessing in disguise that OU had trouble scoring this weekend. This team is overdue to bust out of that funk.

BTW, bizarre mental error for the LSU shortstop, as ASU takes a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Fielder thought she'd cleanly caught a line drive and tossed the ball to third, thinking she'd catch the runner off base for the 3rd out. But the ball clearly hopped off the infield right in front of her glove, and what would have been an easy double play to end the inning ended up with the potential winning run crossing the plate, and a runner out at second.

Huge mistake, and now LSU is 2 outs from elimination with a runner on 2nd in the bottom of the 7th.

So I post that, and the next batter hits down the left field line to score the tying run!
