Newell on with Hale at 435P

Notes on the interview
Newell Notes
Has with him mentor Shamir K-something?

Why at OU
Did very well at Prep School, in two big tournaments
Capel likes his game, personality, wants Newell to be apart of the rebuilding phase
Stats 26.1 Points, 7.5 assists, 5 steals at Prep School
All time leading scorer in one year
Prep School player of the year

Shamir (Mentor)
Says Calvin is very very hungy, leader. Originally a football player, in 7th grade meet Shamir. Was playing up vs 9th and 10th graders, and was doing very well. Always had the passion, Westbrook, Rose. MJ’s (yes the MJ) heart. Wants the ball, clutch. Not many from their area (woodland, outside of Philly) make it out of the area. Calvin has the right attitude, desire, passion.

Calvin in high school
First at Riddly, didn’t play much as freshman. First playing time was in a blowout, had a big game. Didn’t play because of youth

Transferred to another school in his JR (PSA), they wanted him to play football. Was ineligible due to transfer rules. Had to go to court, went to court and was decleared ineligible. Finally got principle to write appeal. Got to play midway through season, average 30 a game from there on out.

Only two offers out of high school
Fairview, Quinnpac
Humbling experience, still had a lot to improve
Went to prep school to improve and get bigger offers.

On his game
Can shoot the three good, can get to the hoop, pull up jumper.
Likes to get teammates involved. Need your team to win, that is the goal the team wins.
Better to get complete statline than score 30.
Wants/likes to win.

20-30 offers out of prep school
OU, Marshall, West Virginia, Florida (finalist)

Shamir on his game
Speed and agility is key to his game, Calvin is a special talent
High voltage player, lots of energy, lovable kid that is very humble.

Faxing the info tonight (letter of intent). Excited to be a Sooner.

Says his academics are in order (thanks to prep school) and has the test scores.

On being a Sooner
Very excited, heard the fans were “crazy” out there.
Excited to work and get to better
Loves the town, home away from home.

hes in for a wide awakening

I almost spewed my Dr. Pepper when I heard him say that. Anyways, I am happy for the young man. It seems like he has been through quite a bit over the past couple of years and has managed to get through it all to become not only a great basketball player but a better person as well and we could certainly use a ton of that!

you never know...he could have been referring to Sally Kern being reelected.

Good news! I'm happy to hear that we might have the healthy kind of competition for the #1 pg spot.

I've only heard that he would have his LOI faxed in by Friday so him faxing it in tonight is right on with that.

Thanks for the recap Sam, good job. Sounds like we got a steal being this late!

It is still weird that he has not sent his papers as yet. I will be interested to see if they are here tomorrow!

I wouldn't be suprised if this kid was like a Jamal Tinsley sleeper type recruit.

I'm excited about this kid. Seems like a really good get, and it shows how good of a recruiter Capel is (IMO).

However, I'm hoping "mentor" actually means mentor and not "handler". I'd rather not have any more attention paid to the program than we already have. Not saying he's that type of kid...just cautious.

I thought the same thing listening to the interview

Just send someone to go get his LOI. In fact I'll drive and go get it...

I am sorry...but "we keep trying to fax it" sounds suspiciously like "the checks in the mail"

Ok, there's no confirmation that the LOI has been received as of yet. Coach Cline leaves for MARSHALL and MARSHALL was one of the 4 schools he mentioned as a possible destination. If Coach Cline was involved with recruiting him to OU... i'm not a real big dot connector, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what I'm thinking. The way things have been going lately, I just hope we're not crapped on again!
