For what it's worth, D Ratings Bracketology currently projects us as a 2 seed in the NIT, well ahead of LSU.

I think 17-15 overall, which means finishing 4-3 here on out, gets us an NIT invite. The word I'm hearing is Porter would fight tooth and nail to convince the team to play, in hopes of making a run and saving his job. A totally different mindset and scenario than when they declined a bid two years ago. And my source is saying its still 50/50 on Porter returning, but that a relatively strong finish could buy him one more year.

making a run in the nit should not save his job.
an nit invite should get him fired

More like 95/5 returning. This AD just won't let him go while still having to pay him. Unless we have a mysterious benefactor willing to pay his buyout, we are stuck with him, IMO.

If he misses the tourney again, he should be fired. No amount of NIT wins can save him. Those are irrelevant.

Might be my favorite thread ever. Would love to be a fly on the wall if this conversations occur.

“Guys, let’s face it. I’m a terrible coach. I’ve had two decades to show otherwise and five years in Norman, but I suck. I clearly am not capable of saving my own job by actually, you know, putting a good team on the floor. But hear me out. How would you feel about playing in a tournament that has been circling the drain for several years, in front of a friends and family only crowd if we get a home game, and trying to win one (or more) for the old Loser. You guys surely have seen that part of the culture wall, right? And why wouldn’t you want me back? I already have several NET 300 games lined up for Nov and Dec. And I’ve been working on some new offseason material — I’ve already found a couple new excuses to trot out for why I can’t win when I’m not playing in the Valley with Krutwig to save my butt. So what do you say? Let’s circle the wagons and get ready for a big one against Sam Houston. We owe those guys!”

Can't see an NIT bid saving his job. But not surprised he would play this time around with that hope. Even with a strong finish, I'm not sure how much that means with several of our top players out of eligibility.
