Games start today.

Did you guys hear about the new rules for the tournament? I might have to watch some to see how it goes.

Moving 3 pt line back
Widening free throw lane
4 quarters
20 second shot clock after offensive rebound
bonus after 5 fouls in a quarter

How can they do things like move the 3-point line if these games still count for official season statistics?

Oklahoma State hosts FGCU tonight at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. Here's how they've been prepping for the changes...

At practice Monday, green tape marked the new 3-point line and the wider lanes.

A crew applied a water-soluble white paint to Gallagher-Iba Arena’s main floor to designate the new 3-point line. They’ll place stickers on the floor to denote the wider lane.

“I think it’s fine,” Boynton said. “It’s different. I like that they kind of tinker with things, want to try to make our game the best it could be.”

All great moves that will hopefully be implemented permanently in the near future. Men's college basketball needs to modernize and play by the same rules that the NBA and international leagues use. Playing quarters would significantly help reduce the number of times that a team is in the bonus for the majority of the game.

I don't like moving the 3 point line back. The shorter 3 point line is one of the few ways that less talented teams can hang with the teams getting all the one and done NBA talent.

I'm not really sure how this "modernizes the game" outside of maybe the 20 seconds after an offensive rebound. Playing halves instead of quarters doesn't really make it a different game.

Playing quarters means the bonus resets every ten minutes, which reduces the endless parade of free throws. It isn't a drastic change, but it helps. Every college coach or announcer who I have heard discuss it is in favor of it --including Lon. Most people think it will be implemented relatively soon.

I would call that a drastic change. Free throws and "the bonus" are a huge part of college basketball right now. I'd also give them 6 fouls so players aren't getting pulled with 15 minutes to play in a half. Give a little extra cushion there since they typically call college games pretty tight.

As much as i hate dick vitale.. i would listen to him on audiobook reading a dictionary than listen to one game called by bill Walton.. what an idiot

Back when the implemented the 3 point line, not every conference added it at the same time. So you had the regular season where you may have the 3 point line, but in the tournament, you didn't.

Bill Walton is the WORST !!!!

Also, I could care 0% about the NIT even if OU was in it. How sad for the OSwho fans to have to deal with it. Total waste of time!!!

I hear that, too, but it seems to me it would incentivize fouling. I'd prefer fewer fouls but maybe the flow would be better with just fewer free throws. I'm just not convinced.

The theory is that there are fewer stoppages of play to shoot free throws. I've always thought it was detrimental to teams that shoot free throws well.
