No-Longer-Way-Too-Early Top 25 for 2015-16

Wow! Five Big 12 teams in the top 25; three in the top 10. I'm surprised any early-season poll would rank the conference that high after a somewhat dismal showing in the NCAA tourney.

I'm not sure OU is a top ten team at this point? Top 15 to 20? Absolutely. I just don't know if we're going to be top 10 good to start the season?

I'm surprised too. The B12 fell on it's face in the NCAA's the past 2 years after being touted to be the best basketball conference. Every team will want to make a name for themselves by knocking off the Sooners in the non-conference games. I would have been happy with a ranking in the 15-20 range.

the ncaa tourney is not the end all be all for conf strength ...

This. Anything can happen in the tournament. Blue-bloods are knocked off by Cinderellas time and again. To say the Big 12 was overrated just because the conference underperformed in the NCAAs is knee-jerk and an over-reaction.

No, but it speaks volumes. Going 5-7 in 2015 with 4 teams losing to lower seeds doesn't speak well. We went 6-7 in 2014. They can't continue to do that after being touted as the toughest overall conference. IMHO the ACC has more quality teams at the top of its league than the Big 12, but, top-to-bottom, the Big 12 is the better league. But who cares which conference has the stronger bottom 3-4 teams? Were Tech and TCU really that good? One could make strong arguments for the Big 10, Pac 12, and even the SEC top teams, too.

Final 2015 Tournament records by conference. Wins as lower seed-Losses as higher seed in parenthesis:

ACC: 17-5 (1-2)

Pac-12: 8-4 (2-0)

Big Ten: 12-7 (4-1)

MVC: 3-2 (1-0)

West Coast: 3-2

SEC: 6-5

C-USA: 1-1 (1-0)

MEAC: 1-1

Northeast: 1-1

Sun Belt: 1-1 (1-0)

Big East 5-6 (0-3)

Big 12: 5-7 (1-4)

Atlantic 10: 2-3 (1-1)

American: 1-2 (0-1)

Mountain West: 1-3

All others (17): 0-1

conf rpi is huge for ncaa tourney bids .. because top 50 games and wins are very important ..

we are the top rpi conf 2 years running going for 3 in a row this year ..

It's like those who rate too highly the bowl season in football: Discounting an entire season based on a single game. Everyone loves the upsets in the NCAA tourney and the fact that it can happen to any team, but then it does happen, and it means the losing team wasn't as good as they appeared over the course of the previous four months?

And the overall quality of a conference matters a great deal, because of the tougher challenges the top teams in that conference face night after night, week after week.
