One season after saying goodbye to Trae Young — the state’s most heralded prospect in years and years — the Norman North are not only hosting a Class 6A regional again, but doing it as the top seed in the western half of the state.
Among Norman schools — despite the NHS boys and girls and the North girls all spending at least part of the season ranked among the top eight — they’ll be the only one.
While the Timberwolves begin the postseason inside their own gym against Capitol Hill, the NHS boys — sent east — will be playing Shawnee at Owasso.
Additionally, the girls’ Class 6A begins Feb. 22, a day the Norman High girls meet Putnam City at Edmond Memorial, while the North girls, in an eastside regional that’s being played on the west side, at Westmoore, take on Jenks.
Among Transcript area teams, only the Westmoore girls join the North boys as regional hosts.
Where they stand
Though this week and next remain in the regular season, only games played through last Friday figure into the OSSAA’s postseason assignments.
Currently, the North boys, who play at Edmond Memorial tonight, are 18-2 and ranked No. 2 by the coaches, behind Broken Arrow. The Tigers are receiving 28 first place votes and the T-Wolves are getting the other three.
The Westmoore girls are 16-4 and ranked No. 5 behind Putnam City West, Bartlesville, Owasso and Edmond Santa Fe.
The NHS girls are 14-6 and ranked No. 8, despite losing three of their last five games.
The North girls are 13-7, have fallen out of the top 10 to No. 11 and have lost three of their last four games.
Sent where?
Elsewhere in The Transcript area, the Moore girls (12-8) begin regional play on Feb. 22 against Midwest City at Putnam City West and the Southmoore girls (2-18) begin the same night against regional host Edmond Memorial.
On Feb. 23, the Moore boys (8-12) begin the playoffs against Edmond Memorial at Midwest City, the Southmoore boys (8-12) face Choctaw at Putnam City North and the Westmoore boys (9-11) meet Sapulpa at Union.
In Class 5A, the Noble boys (7-13) face Del City at Carl Albert on Feb. 23. One day earlier, the Noble girls (11-9) meet Carl Albert at Lawton Eisenhower.
