however, there is too much risk involved in sending guys out to play with such minimal evaluation. Since i guess you have some expertise, what would you have done? Would you have tried to get a second opinion or sent him out there to play. Hindsight says second opinion. That why trainers get paid. They make those calls and usually er on the side of caution.
I'm quite certain the trainer evaluated to the fullest extent, as did the orthopedic surgeon. Those people are good at their jobs, and they've seen hundreds (if not thousands) of knee injuries in their careers. At that point, they would have advised the player of their opinion, any and all risks involved with continue to participate, their recommendation(s), etc. They would then tell the same to the head coach or an assistant to communicate to the head coach.
The only question is whether they knew after evaluation that the ACL was torn. Doesn't really make a difference as the outcome wouldn't have changed, but this is the only unanswered question I have.
