First, thanks to you and the team for your effort this year.

Second, love the way you run the program.

Third, it is my observation that the game has changed and you should consider a couple of things when coming up with a plan for next year, to wit:

-- Don't bother defending the twenty feet between the rim and the 3 line. Nobody shoots the ball in this space and who cares if they do.

-- The game is now played at the rim and on the 3 line. Body up people past the line that can theoretically shoot the 3 and prevent the shot being taken. You can't run at nor guard the 3 without fouling, the shot must be prevented from being taken. Ex. Rhode Island bellied up all over the court.

-- as for dribble penetration, which your defense scheme is designed to prevent, don't worry about it. Like WV, Kansas and every other major program, just put someone under the net and have them get in front of dribblers and then jump into the air and keep their arms vertical. The point of this is to contact the dribbler as hard as you can with your players body. This isn't a foul now and dramatically lowers shooting percentages at the rim.

--as for stopping dribblers, just have your player hold their arms out to the side and hold them out stiffly. This type of arm bar is not called and allows the defender to slow down a dribbler until the defender can catch up.

---- Don't leave shooters past the 3 line to help dribblers inside the 3 line ever

-- Don't worry about whether these are rules violations, the game isn't called that way.

----enforce an internal rule that a 4 or 5 can't be passed to unless they are in low post scoring position.

--- And finally, freeman, polla, mcnease and Doolittle must only work on low post positioning and scoring in the low post and flattening and finishing at the rim. Quit letting them practice their shooting from outside 4-5 feet.

The game has changed and you should change with it. Offensively, it is a game of 3s and dunks. Quit defending anything else. Otherwise, stay the course and l look forward to next year. Thanks for this year.

Bolded points don't line up with the underlined part. You can't say that the 4's and 5's can't touch the ball except on the post as well as tell them to focus on finished on the block, and then say the game is 3s and dunks.

Kruger's offense has been, and will always be 4 out 1 in. Where the 4 can shoot a 3 as well as get it inside. Spangler was this player. Spangler was not a low block player, he was a catch and shoot 3 or dribble down for a layup.

Matt -- I wasn't clear. I just want our post working on scoring in the low post and don't want Freeman, Doo, Polla or McNease shooting 3s. They don't do it well enough.

My thought is that if we can develop low post scoring, we can free up our perimeter players for 3. I want us to shoot close in interior shots or 3s, I just don't want the guys mentioned above doing it.

Defensively, guard the 3 and the rim, only. This can be done, without taking charges and whether or not you can stop dribble penetration. quit focusing on stopping dribblers with help from inside or out.

Lots of great points. I think the main one is for a guard not to leave his man to go try and stop another player who is dribbling into the paint. Very few of them can make a pull up jump shot or a floater but can easily make a pass to a wide open 3 point shooter.

We do tend to overhelp on dribble penetration and leave 3 point shooters. Whether that's taught or due to a lack of discipline, I can't say but it has to stop. This is why it's so important to have a rim protector inside.

Release Freeman from his scholarship

Since January 2015 all Power 5 conference schools and Notre Dame award multi-year(4/5) scholarships with cost-of-attendance stipends. The implementation was phased in so students awarded scholarships prior to January 2015 are still on annual renewable scholarships. Today those student-athletes are virtually non-existent as most have already utilized their full 4 years. Exceptions may be redshirted and medical waiver student athletes that have been given a 6th year.
