Osby

Other than saying he was the best player on the team, what did Capel say to hype him?

I read things like he was the best player our guys would face all season. The problem is when you read this board it is very easy to not remember things correctly. A fan could have said that or I could simply remember it wrong. The only thing I can personally attribute to Capel with certainty is that Osby was the best player on the team last year. That seems to be true or certainly very close to the truth.

Capel was right about Osby. He was the best play on our roster last year...still is for that matter, if you don't count M'Baye.

I'm not the least bit disappointed in what I've seen of Romero. He has actually exceeded my expectations at this point of the season, and I think he will get better. After all, we're five games into the season, not on the downhill side of our schedule. He's one of those players this team cannot afford to lose. The SLU game was proof of that.

but I believed his averages at Miss St we not an accurate picture of how good he is/was. He was behind Jarvis Varnardo and Kodi Augustus. Not to mention MSU was loaded at his position with Varnardo, Augustus, Renardo Sidney, Elgin Bailey, John Riek and Taylor Luczak.

:clap :clap :clap

I've been wondering the same. And right now I don't think Capel was out of touch with reality for stating that.

The only other instance I can think of is when I recall Capel making an analogy with Osby and Epe Udoh (former first round stud at Baylor)... I remember some people believed what Capel was saying was that he thought Osby would be just as good as Udoh. I on the other hand thought Capel used Udoh to make a point that just because you underperform at the first school you play at doesn't mean you can't live up to your potential at the school you transfer to. And Capel proceeded to use Udoh as an example to illustrate his point. That's how I perceived it, anyways.

Other than that, I don't know what else OU fans are referring to. But I very well could've missed something else that Capel said.

He called him a more athletic Jordan Hamilton.

...Osby is pretty athletic.

Perhaps but I have seen Joradn Hamilton in him yet. I hope I do.

The best thing is that virtually everyone says M'Baye is the best player on the team this year. That is a big statement when you consider Osby, Cam Clark, Pledger, Fitzgerald, Grooms and Newell. Especially when you consider they are all returning.

Agreed on both points. Osby isn't on Hamilton's level now, but strictly from an athletic standpoint I don't see the comparison being a reach.

And I'm excited to see what M'Baye can do. He was a gamer at Wyoming.

I am extremely optimistic that Hornbeak, Hield or Henry can work his way into the top 7 or 8 man rotation. I am really hoping Hield or Hornbeak can be one of the better three point shooters on the team. I have no idea if that is realistic but both are top 100 prospects that play sg/w so it does not seem out of the question to me. Just imagine if one of them can shoot like Michael Neal did his junior season or McKensie did. That would be a big weapon coming off the bench for an already deep team. OU would actually bring three significant scoring threats off the bench.

Ya I was talking to one of my friends about this when we were watching them play Santa Clara. A spot-up shooter to come off the bench would help this team immensely next season.

I think one of the reasons he hasn't flourished this year is that he's working within our offense rather than being featured himself. He and Cam looked like the only two that belonged on the same court as St. Louis a couple nights ago, and I think that shows a lot. He's got a tremendous amount of talent and will be a very good player for us by the end of the year. He just has to learn how to move around without the ball so we can get him his shot.

He looked like he was a lot more comfortable facing up as well. Were any of his points with his back to the basket? Perhaps we need to run four out and one in with him on the wing as well? He just doesn't look comfortable backing up from a few feet away.

I think he's a good athlete that's better than most of what we had on the roster.

I also think that he's not the quickest thinker on the court and I hope that improves as he works his way back into a regular role as a player.

I think he has flourished. He is averaging 12 points and more than 8 boards a game. That is pretty good, especially for a guy with minimal experience.

Here is the quote from Capel I remember (from last year):

“Our scout team is really pushing us in practice,” Capel said. “Our guys having to go against Romero every day is really challenging them. He dominates our practices. We haven't played against anyone better durin...

The quote was truncated because the article is older than 60 days and I don't have the access from newsok to get the rest of the article. If I remember correctly, the quote continues on with something like "We haven't played against anyone better during practice than Osby."

EDIT:
Here is a link to an article on soonersports.com that has the full quote:

http://www.soonersports.com/sports/m-baskbl/archive/012211aab.html

“We are improving. It takes young guys a while sometimes to figure it out, especially on the defensive end. That is the biggest area. But again, I think our guys are getting better. Our scout team is really pushing us in practice. I think those guys having to go against Romero (Osby) every day is really challenging. He dominates our practices. We haven’t played against anyone better during conference play than what these guys face in practice every day (in Osby). So I think that is really helping them. We are starting to get a little bit better in guarding him in practice, which I think has given us a little bit more confidence as we get into games.”

To be fair, this quote was made on January 22 when OU had only aTm, Baylor, Texas, Tech, and CU.

I don't understand this debate on Osby. Without him and Grooms, this team would be one and four with no hope. We are lucky to have him.

How do you know? You don't know who we might have recruited should those two have not been here.
