OSU is in trouble

OSU is slated as an #11 right now before the game, probably on the outside looking in now. I don't see how they make it unless there is a deep run in the Big XII tournament...closing schedule is brutal.

When Blake missed time from injury people were clamoring that the committee should take it into consideration, sort of a similar situation.

Watching that game...Its obvious that Ford doesn't get it. he got the lead playing post players like Cox and Soucek with Murphy. In the 2nd half he loses b/c he doesn't play those guys. He truly doesn't get it. Just like last year. They were better without williams b/c they were playing Jurick a great deal of minutes and then when Williams came back Jurick's minutes dropped a lot.

OSU has to win the Big 12 Tourney to get into the NCAA tourney.

There's a huge difference between giving allowances for injury and doing the same because a player went into the stands, assaulted a fan and got his ass suspended for three games.

Especially when his team had already lost four in a row at that point -- one would be hard-pressed to convince some of us that Smart's absence made all that much difference.

If anyone were claiming allowances should be made for Cobbins' injury (and perhaps they are, I don't know), that would be different.

i can understand giving some grace when a team is playing without a key piece IF that key piece will be back come tournament time.

So a team that was on the bubble at worst last night (and I would have been decent coin on them getting in), and lost a road game in overtime to a bubble team, could go 7-1 down the stretch (5-0 plus 2-1 in the conference tournament) and miss the NCAA? That 7-2 finish, with a bunch of big wins and no bad losses would take them from an 11 seed in ESPN's projection to out of the tournament?

If OSU plays like a tournament team the rest of the way, I think they get in due to going 0-3 with Smart out. I'd say 4 more wins would do it.

they have to finish 8-10 at least and make the finals of the big 12 tourney to have any shot at an at large ... and that would be a long shot

they were on the bubble last night prior to the game.....

They've lost 7 in a row..... 7! they're out of the NCAA's

No, they don't. They were in most projections (all that I saw) prior to last night. They were 4-8 prior to last night. They had a tough remaining schedule. They didn't need to go 4-2 and 2-1 in the conference tournament to make the NCAA field, especially because any success they have with Smart back will be used to justify minimizing the three losses when he was out.

PM if you'd like, as I'd be happy to bet that OSU makes the tournament at 8-10 with only making the conference semis, or that they make it at 7-11 if they make the tournament finals.

FYI, just checked USA Today, and Palm STILL has them in (last team in). I team that's on the bubble doesn't need to finish 6-2 against good competition to get in.

True story: I googled "OSU Baylor" to find game photos and the final score (I watched, I just didn't remember the numbers) and the first return was the recap of their Feb. 1 game.

Headline: "Baylor stuns No. 8 Oklahoma State to end five-game skid"

It really seems longer ago than earlier this month that OSU was ranked, top ten and definitely NCAA bound.

only 1 team all time has been more than 2 game under in conf record and gotten an at large bid ..

OSU does not make it at 7-11 without winning the conference tournament.
They basically have to go 5-0 to get an at-large. 4-1 and they are probably on the wrong side of the bubble. They were 43 in the RPI before their loss to Baylor.

That said, I don't think they're going 5-0 or 4-1.

Remember, as of today, OSU is 1-6 against the top 5 teams in the Big 12.

I hope they go 3-2 and lose in the finals so we find out. I think they get in if it plays out that way, somewhat dependent upon who they play in the conference touranament. If they go 4-1 and make the Big 12 finals, I'd be willing to bet a lot of money they make it in.

When was the last time a Big 12 conference team got in with a .500 or below record?

I know it was the "Big 8 era," but I remember when Iowa State got in with a 5-9 conference record. I think it was in 1992 - when they had the matinee-idol (sarcasm intended) Julius Michalik as one of their marquee players.

One year around that time the Big 8 got 6 teams.
