Other College BBall Thread 2024-5

SEC tourney setup is kinda crazy. OU would have to play 5 games in 5 days if we make the final. The top 4 teams would only have to play 3 games in 3 days. That’s quite a difference.
As a team that needs a win to make the tournament, it benefits us. Instead of probably going one-and-done against #3 seed Alabama, we get a competitive winnable game against Georgia.

This format benefits those at the top (rewarding them for a great regular season with fewer tournament games) while also benefiting those on the bubble by steering them away from the really good teams in the early rounds.

Hopefully St Mary’s disposes of Pepperdine tonight (semifinal). Last thing we need is a tournament winner like them when other conference teams (St Mary’s and Gonzaga) are locks. Also need Gonzaga to be San Francisco.

OSU (a.k.a. "the 'basketball school' in Oklahoma" according to the media) and TCU are both done at the Big 12 tournament. Both Tulsa schools are well under .500, and ORU is already done, so OU will be the only D-1 men's program in Oklahoma that will finish with a winning record this season.

Last time any state school made the NCAA Tournament was 2021 when OU/OSU/ORU all won at least 1 game in the tournament with ORU going to the Regional Finals

UCF and KSU won the other two Big 12 games, FWIW. I had to see it on my laptop's "home page," because the early Big 12 games weren't even on TV.

I assume the Bobby Hurley firing watch has already begun.

I also hope that Indiana flops in its own head coaching search. If you've ever seen the ESPN 30-for-30 story on Bobby Knight's downfall, it didn't exactly paint IU fans as very loveable. Death threats for everyone involved with Knight's well-deserved firing - and as I recall, that included threats to the ill-fated Neil Reid (the player he grabbed by the throat). Reid died fairly young, as was revealed in that documentary (36).

My wife - then girlfriend - was in grad school at IU at the time. We stood around and watched the protests that turned into riots. It was wild.
