Hey Guys,

Now that I have your attention with an obvious over exaggeration that probably led you in here with fingers blazing ready to write a scathing retort, I'd like to inform you guys about something cool that a former Sooner has going on.

Nick Thompson is currently working on putting together a youth home in the Denver, CO area to help troubled youth achieve a second chance in life. Once his playing days were done he found his calling in life in giving these kids a place to belong, and a place where they can be fostered and brought up to become great men. He is able to do this while also honoring his old coach and mentor Brad Barton who passed away by naming his soon to be home after him.

I always felt bad for Nick Thompson, as he was the butt of everyone's jokes in the brief time he was at OU.

Nick wasn't a good player, but I just imagine he gave it his all every time he stepped onto the court. And I seem to recall that he did hit one game-winning shot for the Sooners. At least there's that.

Not a good player is relative. I bet Nick Thompson would have done just fine if he transferred to OCU, Northeastern State, Panhandle State, or one of the hundreds of other smaller schools. Would have been a real nice player for them, actually.

You're right, scrybe. Nick Thompson was a product of Jeff Capel's recruiting efforts in his last season at OU, when he struck out on too many high-profile recruits until he was forced to sign anyone available to fill roster space. By all accounts Nick was a good person. He was simply in over his head at the high D-1 level.

Having said all of that, I applaud him for his efforts to lend a helping hand to troubled kids in the Denver area. His story in the letter he wrote confirms everything I heard about him when he was at OU. I plan to give some serious thought to contributing to this worthy cause.

Best of luck, Nick!
