Ou - byu

Spacing, patience and shooting was much better. It was also great to see that CParis was at the game.

Sherri mentioned that she's proud of the team captains. Anyone know who that is, exactly?

Team looked like a conference title contender last night. Great energy all night, and Maddie looked like a MVP the first quarter. Good rebound game against a good team.

Maddie looked great in the first quarter. We need for her to play that aggressive every minute she's on the court. Everyone will be watching her closely in the next few games to see how productive she is.

Peyton is still the player who carries the mail. We would be in serious trouble without her.

Gabbi handled herself better last night but we still need to see her to gain confidence in her shot.

Kaylon played better last night.

Derica knocked down some big shots.

We played better defense. I'm not sure if we hustled that much more or if it was because BYU was not as quick as N. Texas. That bears watching.

We barely won the rebounding battle. That has to improve.

Our bench, other than ViVi, isn't producing much offensively right now. We need a couple of the reserves to step up their game so there isn't a big drop off when the starters come out.

Overall, that game is just what we needed. They just need to continue to work hard and improve in every phase of the game.

I didn't get to see the game it's good to here they played better.

Team wise I really loved our gap defense, and aggressiveness. Ball movement was better and with few exceptions pretty good rebounding job.

Derica had a nice all around game. It's nice to see a guard on face breaks protect the ball and pump fake the defense for layups.

Maddie, Gabbi, and Peyton complimented each other well. I think we have 8 really solid kids, and if we can get Gioya healthy, we can have a really nice rotation going into conference play. Glad to see Kaylon back to her old self, good game from her.

I like the way our kids are defending with their feet and keeping their hands away from slapping at the ball, the kids are learning. Hope they can keep up the intensity.

If Sherri is finishing every practice with lots of running and suicides, the team should be in much better condition by the time we get to conference play. That will keep the starters on the court longer as a unit.

Last year, our top scorers were:

13.6 Peyton
12.2 Kay Kay
9.9 Gioya
9.6 Sharane
8.2 Gabbi

This year:
18.3 Peyton
12.0 Kay Kay
9.7 Derica
9.7 Maddie
7.3 Vivi

Gabbi is at 1.7

We aren't a lot different. We could use a little more from Maddie, and a lot more from Gabbi. Gioya could put us over the top..

It was really nice to see Maddie go off. They adjusted and she didn't shoot as much as she did in the first quarter. She was hustling all the time though.

We've got to have her offensively and defensively all game. She can't disappear.

I don't get the Shaya, Wyatt experiment. Well, I kind of do Wyatt. She seems to be the best of Edwards and L. Williams. She needs to heat up more and I think she's slow, which will hurt.

I LOVE Vivi. She is going to be really good by the end of four years. I would not be surprised to see her in the starting line-up some games or by the end of the season for sure.

In the back of my mind I wonder what Kornet would have added to this team this year. She must have known she wasn't going to play much, but it seems to me should would have been a good choice at the two some this year.

I think a part of the Maddie cool down was their adjustments. I think a part was that we quit moving with so much energy. She was taking advantage of open shots created by spacing and movement.

Let's say that we have player "A" and player "B." Player A comes off the bench and may give us four or five points per game, more if hot. But, her turnovers cause us to lose four points, and her defense let's the opposition score about four points that would not be scored if she weren't on the floor. Net +4, -8 = -4
Player B rarely scores. A score is a plus. But, they only make one turnover, and they limit the other team to maybe a point more than a starter, perhaps even a positive. Net score, -1. Anything they get on offense is gravy.

I think Shaya falls into the Player B category. You don't get a lot offensively, but she doesn't make mistakes and give up points. T'Ona is a bit in this vein, limited by turnovers. But, there are a few offensive points, and some good defense. Kornet was an A.

I just think that for now Sherri is happy when the reserves don't cost us many points.

We'll have to wait and see, but I think Shaya is getting a lot of minutes that McKenna would be playing. And LaNesia is playing more because Gioya is out.

Shaya is a big body and it's remarkable how much better and quicker she's moving now that she's fully healthy. She's still not yet much of a threat offensively, but I've been impressed with her defense and all-around hustle.

Hope she continues to improve.

And, yes, it was good to see McKenna back in uniform. I'd assume she'll start getting some playing time soon.

Right now, Shaya is the only backup for Maddie at the 4. She's doing ok as a sub, but we need her to continue to develop. McKenna may be the other alternative there, but we'll see.

A good thing: OU took out the starters in the fourth quarter. The reserves were not effective scoring. But, they were apparently effective on defense. OU won the quarter, 8-7.

(We won, only 34 posts so far. 95 when we lost).

I just re-watched the game. Curious:

First quarter
Maddie 13
Peyton 2

Rest of the game
Maddie 2
Peyton 19

Peyton, Maddie, and Kay Kay didn't do much wrong. Kay Kay had a lot more resolve when she looked at the basket. Seems like she was facing the basket on each shot, whereas she had been just kind of lobbing it up there against NT. She was very deliberate in her one hard bounce drive. This was a completely different player than the one who played against NT.
