OU coaches honored

That Joe C. feller is a pretty good AD, eh.

Awesome to have three great coaches on that list!

How so? I think lists like this do not mean a whole lot. However,
it is nice to recognized and to have women in sports recognized.

The only curious thing I saw about the list was the number of fairly young women on it.

I was surprised to see that it included Griner (influential?) and a number of football and baseball players, playing on men's teams. Interesting, yes. Is that influential? I guess that it may change thinking about who can play what.

Was the author asleep for the 2013 softball season (you know, that one where pretty much all the talking heads were saying that OU was at worst a top 2 team EVER)?

I was just curious. I had no idea what your take was on it.

I agree. I think the title is incorrect. These are not really the most influential in sports. Possibly could be a list of successful women in sports. But I truly fail to see how some of these folks are considered influential.

I think Sherri is more influential than she is successful and would be higher on a true list of influential women. Same for Mulkey, only opposite...more successful than influential.

Other curiosities: Cheryl Miller?? How is she influential? Best WBB player of all time? I could see that; Successful player? absolutely. Trailblazer? definitely. But she had trouble finding a job in WBB and ended up at Langston. And as soon as she can get someone to hire her, she is outta there.

And where in Hades is Becky Hammon? Seriously. First woman coach in the NBA???

If we are talking INFLUENTIAL...how about Martina Navratilova, or Billie Jean King? Influential overload. Or, how about Marta Karolyi in women's gymnastics? there is NO ONE more influential there. There wasn't a single female broadcaster.

I could go on and on. BUT...as a list to recognize, it was entertaining.

I realize that SC receives a nice salary and a really nice salary compared to other coaches who have experienced winning a NC. But I did not realize she is the "highest paid coach in the country" in women's basketball. Geno better go in and get a new deal this year! :ez-laugh:

PS...many things about the article remains a "wonder" to me!

"It is no wonder why Sherri Coale is women’s basketball’s highest paid coach in the country."

I think the article is in error with regard to Sherri being the highest paid women's coach in the country.

Geno is making $2 million per year while Sherri is paids $1.1 million. It is probable that Kim Mulkey makes more than Sherri but with Baylor being a private school who knows. Although I would not be surprised that Kim's contract specifically provides that she be paid more than Sherri.

I will remain in a constant sense of wonder as to why so many so-called Sooner fans are offended by the amount of money OU pays SC.

And, by the way, sybarite and giraffespots, I agree wholeheartedly with what you posted. Someone seems to be getting "Influential" confused with "Successful."

Thanks for the links Spock. I realize Geno makes more which is why I followed with the laugh and statement that I "wonder" about many things in the article...SC as the highest paid, many they considered "influential", etc.

I'm not in the "so-called" category...just a disappointed fan.

I tend to believe that she is evaluated and receiving a salary based on obtaining goals other than what she does in post season play (NCAA tournament) and her tenure. She more than likely gets some really nice incentives for post-season play. Otherwise, it does not make sense compared to other WBB coaches who are more successful in the post season.

At the same time, if Geno is evaluated the same...he should be paid more than he's making now!

Geno - 30 years - Overall .873
SC - 20 years - Overall .671

+1

But why make it personal? I don't base my opinion of any coach's performance on how much (or how little) money he or she makes. And I'm not offended if I find out that he/she makes more money than I make.

Not saying my opinion is the only valid one. Just the one that makes the most sense to me.

What are you viewing as "making it personal"? For me, it's not personal. I'm just evaluating the data/statistics/compensation. I'm not offended...just "wondering".

I was basing that observation on the fact that Coale's salary is brought up almost every time a discussion is started about how good/bad a job she's doing. The tendency to constantly bring money into the discussion makes me think her salary must be offensive to some.

If I'm wrong, I apologize.
