We have been talking a lot about what OU needs in recruiting, and I always say a scoring guard and two post players. David Tairu is a perfect example of a juco guy coming in and making the team better from day one.

In his first season out of juco he averages 11 points a game, shoots 47% from the 3pt line, and is a good athlete and defender. That is the type of guy I hope OU signs for next year, and maybe that kid Capel is recruiting (Poland or the other guy in Kansas) is that type of player.

Tairu had 18 points and 5 rebounds in 21 minutes tonight... Singletary had a big game, but when you have a guy that can produce like that in 20 minutes that is huge. When I looked at the box score my first thought was "Tairu won them the game".

I think Capel knows OU needs a guy like that out of juco, which is why he is recruiting a few guys in Kansas right now. Hopefully he can sign one, along with the 7 foot guy from Southern Idaho.

I don't think Tairu can do that more than once every 10 or so games....11ppg for Tech means, to me, he is playing b/c they don't have anyone better. Do we need a 3 point specialist? Yes. Maybe Pledger can do that next year.

Next year, we need to run like this:

PG TMG
SG TJ Taylor (I hope)
SF Cade Davis
PF Cam Clark (could play SF too but I suspect we'll see him at the 4 next year unless we recruit a stud 4 or 5)
C Tiny Gallon

Bench:
Wings: Pledger, Willis
Bigs: HELP! We need some bigs so badly it's not funny...that's the key to our recruiting.

I think Tony Smith could be that type of guy. I am worried that KState is going to get him though.

Where do you see that Tairu is shooting 47% from 3 point range? Does he just not have very many attempts? He wasn't among the stat leaders on the Big 12's website (unless I just overlooked it).

The thing about Tairu is he's a role player. He had a good game, but he's a role player. As a role player he's not going to help Tech get to the NCAA tournament with their roster. Now if you surround him with Blake Griffin, he's going to provide the push that turns a good team into a great team. Kind of like what Crocker, Taylor, and Patillo gave us for stretches last year. So looking ahead for OU, you want TMG and Tiny to be major threats and surround them with a guy that's going to be that 3rd of 4th option offensively and a guy who's not going to be a liability defensively.

BTW, TMG is now shooting 50% from deep through 5 conference games. Very impressive. :tmg

He is 18-36 (50%) on the year.

11 ppg is good at the Big 12 level. He had 18 against OU, 13 against Mizzou, 18 against New Mexico, 9 (in 13 minutes) against Washington, 15 against UTEP, 17 against Stanford, 11 and 9 against Wichita State, 14 against TCU, 19 against Oregon State.

The guy produces, and doesn't play a whole lot of minutes. He splits time with Okorie and Reese and they all average about the same amount of minutes.

He is exactly the type of guy OU needs next year... An efficient, smart, talented guy who just produces on both ends of the floor. He isn't a star, but he is an above average role player that could be playing for anyone.

The thing about Tairu is he's a role player. He had a good game, but he's a role player. As a role player he's not going to help Tech get to the NCAA tournament with their roster.

All teams need role players, and Tairu is better than any role player OU currently has this year. OU would absolutely be in a better position with David Tairu. Imagine if you had a guy who gets into double figures every game as the role player instead of Pledger (right now), Davis (off and on), Willis, etc.

So looking ahead for OU, you want TMG and Tiny to be major threats and surround them with a guy that's going to be that 3rd of 4th option offensively and a guy who's not going to be a liability defensively.

I feel like the primary players for OU are TMG, Gallon, and hopefully Cameron Clark. I would like to see OU surround those guys with players like Tairu who are good shooters, good defenders, and good athletes at the guard spots.

In the paint OU needs rebounders and shot blockers, and someone who can get some garbage.

Yeah, he doesn't have enough attempts to qualify on the Big 12 leaders list.

Also, not sure why the guy up there made that remark about his 11.6 ppg not being good... That is more than Tiny Gallon and the same as TMG.

Tairu is a good player, very efficient, and is having a great first year for them.

i hope you're right. but i think he's completely wide open.

martin was out watching him play today, btw.

So, your two studs average a little under 15pts a game a piece. The rest of your rotation is responsible for the other 40 or so. It's not a big deal he averages 11pts. Someone has to average them between him Okorie, Reese, and Lewandowski.

OU has David Tairu. I'd take Tony Crocker over David Tairu any day of the week. Tony Crocker is twice the player Tairu is. David Tairu wishes he could do the things Tony Crocker could on the court. Cade Davis is David Tairu. The problem isn't that we need David Tairu. The problem is we need Steven pledger and Ray Willis to be playing on the level of Tony Crocker and Cade Davis. Because essentially that's what you're saying. David Tairu needs to take one of those guys scholarships.

I think Pledger and Willis will continue to improve their game. Not sure about Willis ever seeing a lot of playing time, but I think Pledger will see even more minutes next season. In other words, they'll get there; they're both still young players.

Oh, I am sorry, I made the assumption that you would actually read the thread title. I am aware that Tony Crocker is is OU's Tairu this year, which is precisely why I put that "next year" thing on the title.

I would take Tairu over Cade Davis, Stephen Pledger, and Ray Willis any day of the week THIS year. And OU needs to sign a guy like him NEXT year when Tony is gone.

Obviously. That's your whole point. We'll see how far he takes Tech in the NCAA tourney.

I would take Tairu over WW since he can hit wide open shots instead of clanking them off the rim every freaking time.

To respond and clarify:

1. Bad or average teams - like Tech in my opinion - have players averaging lots of points...because they don't have anyone else to play the minutes...From what I saw, I don't think Tairu is a difference maker. That's just me. Switch out a better guy for him, like Cade Davis, for example, and Tech would be a better team. Also, I'm not a big "stat" guy. I can tell a lot more with my eyes than from a stat sheet as to "who's good."

2. I'd take Cade Davis over him every day of the week. (With Willis, I'll make the trade).

3. Just because I don't have 4800 posts doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about.

Couldn't we say the same about how far Cade Davis would take OU in the tournament?

What would you call Oklahoma? Since you call Tech a bad or average team, you must think OU is in the same category or worse, yes?

Why would you take Cade Davis over him? There isnt one thing on a basketball court Cade does better than Tairu.

Let's see. No disrespect to Tairu. He's a good player. However, if you look around the league, and you look at people who start at the wing guard position around the league, and about all of those guys average between 9 and 13pts. Obi Muenelo, Thorne and CU, Hamilton and Bradley at UT, English, Tony C, etc. That's pretty much their job is to knock down open shots on the wing and slash for a bucket or occasionally get out on the break.
Also, if you look at the Dynamics of Tech's team, they have one player who if hot can solicit a double team in Singletary, and another guy that can collapse a defense of the drive in Roberson. He probably reeps the reward of that offensively. But you really haven't even referenced what type of skills this guy has, because you don't know. Does he have a quick first step? Is he strong with the drive? Can he knock down contested shots? Can he create when things break down? We don't know. All we know is he averages 11pts a game and Capel should go after a Juco like him. If you kinda gave a breakdown of what he does on the court, more specifically, what skills he had, you would be a little more convincing.

Now Watching the Tech Game, It was hard to follow because they had no names on the back of their jerseys, but I believe he was the guy who had the mohawk maybe? If that was him, he got absolutely abused by Tony Crocker, especially early in the game.
