OU vs. UTEP Statistical Plus/Minus

I will start out by noting that UTEP was the best team OU has played this year. OU played like a slightly-above-average team (read "#100"), while UTEP played like a top 20 team.

(Boxscore)
OU Statistical +/-
Code:
Player SPM	Min	Contribution
Gallon, Tiny 9.4	26	4.3
Crocker, Tony 6.6	33	3.8
Mason-Griffin, Tommy	4.4	37	2.9
Warren, Willie 2.1	39	1.5
Wright, Ryan -5.5	15	-1.5
Pledger, Steven -6.5	22	-2.5
Davis, Cade -7.7	28	-3.8
UTEP Statistical +/-
Code:
Player SPM	Min	Contribution
Stone, Julyan 15.4	35	9.4
Culpepper, Randy	9.8	39	6.7
Williams, Jeremy	12.1	17	3.6
Moultrie, Arnett	6.4	28	3.1
Caracter, Derrick	3.6	28	1.8
Gordon, Isaac -7.9	2	-0.3
Britten, Claude -6.6	10	-1.2
Polk, Christian -2.7	35	-1.7
Strong, Myron -17.4	6	-1.8

There were a few bright spots for OU. Tiny played his fifth straight solid game. He's rounding into a solid player, but he can be sooo much more. He needs to settle in as a +5 or better player every game.

Tony played okay; not up to his standards but still decent.

TMG contributed a bunch but also had some issues. Only 1 assist to 2 TOs? He showed he can score, but he needs to show he can defend.

Willie played a mediocre game. He started well, but ended up shooting OU out of the game later. That, and turning the ball over AGAIN. He has turned the ball over 45 times, 15 more than TMG, who is second. (And he has fewer assists than TMG.)

The rest of the team played poorly; Cade is expected to do better but was practically invisible. Three points, 1 rebound, and 2 fouls is all he could muster in 28 minutes? What's that?

For UTEP, Stone, Culpepper, Williams, and Moultrie played well. Stone didn't miss a shot, with a stat line of 15 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 TOs, and 1 steal. Nice. Culpepper scored 27 on efficient shooting, playing a good scorer's game. Williams played only 17 minutes but went 4-4 and got 4 rebounds and 1 assist.

OU's flaws remain obvious: they don't play good defense and play a sloppy form of offense. OU's offense is still good (#34 in the nation) but the defense is awful (#222 in the nation).

Here are the totals through 12 games, with the minutes per game listed:
OU Statistical +/- Twelve Game Totals
Code:
Player SPM	MPG	Contribution
Crocker, Tony 6.7	33.3	46.0
Gallon, Tiny 5.1	24.4	25.6
Davis, Cade 4.4	28.1	25.1
Warren, Willie 2.9	30.2	17.7
Mason-Griffin, Tommy	1.3	21.3	5.6
Hardrick, Kyle -4.0	0.3	-0.2
Gerber, Beau -43.0	0.3	-2.9
Franklin, T.J. -25.7	0.7	-3.5
Willis, Ray -14.8	2.3	-6.8
Allen, Orlando -9.4	3.8	-7.3
Wright, Ryan -2.5	16.1	-8.3
Pledger, Steven -1.3	33.7	-9.2
Fitzgerald, Andrew	-6.6	7.7	-10.4

I have converted from simply summing the game totals to using season stats and then running SPM; that clears up some of the granularity issues (players getting 0 assists or rebounds really hurts them in the equation).

It helps us get a better look at the overall team picture. TMG has actually crossed into the positives, now, but still has a ways to go. Tony Crocker leads; Tiny is solid, Cade is solid. Willie has really fallen off from last year.

And other than Tiny, there aren't any post players on the team worth much.

Statistical Plus/Minus (SPM) is a method of estimating each player's impact from the box score statistics. SPM is listed in points above the average player playing per 100 possessions--so if that player was replaced by an average player for 100 possessions, SPM is the difference in the final margin. The total of all player's contributions will sum to the actual scoring margin (each team's total will equal half of the overall margin). The original method was outlined by Dan Rosenbaum at 82games.com; recently additional factors were added by Neil Paine at Basketball-Reference.com. I previously compiled the complete 2008-2009 NCAA numbers on this forum.
