OU vs. Baylor

We have 2 more seasons to close the gap with a bevy of supposedly great/promising new kids coming in.

I’m going to stick with Coale and the team throughout that time to see what develops, but the truth is Sherri would already have been fired if her name wasn’t SC, the birth mother of OU WBB success

I do not foresee it changing. Without some new blood in coaching, the team will not be that much better, even with better players. And that is assuming that the Ana and Shaina, stay, that the commitments come and that they stay. I just do not see it getting better. Hope I am wrong.

There were obviously some disappointing things about this game, but also some positives.

Ana played quite well - including shooting great from the 3 point line.

One main problem I see is that Penzo is too selfish with the ball. An easy place to see that is the last 3.5 seconds of the first half when she takes the inbounds, never even looks for someone to pass to, and ends up trying an impossible half court shot.

And at other times it appears she does not want to pass it to Ana - even when it is obviously what needs to happen. Unfortunate. You cannot be an effective non-shooting point guard when you don't like to pass the ball.

It is also disappointing that we have players who have been playing basketball for years, yet cannot make 10-12 foot open jump shots. Obvious examples of this are Penzo and Pellington. It makes no sense. If they wanted to improve on that they would be shooting a thousand of those after practice every day.

The next 6 games will determine our chances this season, starting at K State this Wednesday. Most are at home. If we win 5 of the 6, we will end up with a winning record and 3rd or 4th in the conference.

Some of us are spoiled and want to see OU get back to a top 2 finish in the BIg12, but every year Sherri can keep us in the top 4-5 of the conference... Sherri gets her team to the postseason every year and a top half finish in conference, that’s successful for most coaches around the country, I can’t see her being let go and I don’t think she has done anything to be let go at this point in time...

With your logic can I then assume that we need to call Joe C. on the carpet for paying Sherri $1.1 million to do a job we could get done for $400K by at least a half dozen other coaches? Athletic departments can ill afford to poof off a half million dollars for nothing in return.

If you are going to pay her top 5 pay nationally you should be able to expect a conference championship at least every 3 or 4 years instead of not having one in what will soon be 7 years. Would also be nice to beat your rival more than twice in the last 7 years (2-14 I think).

Not saying OU will not get "better players" in the future but you think other teams aren't going to do the same? If OU is 1-14 against the lady bears since 2010 that would tend to make be believe that KM is just flat out better the coach. I said it before and will until things change there no way in heck I would pay SC what she is making now. If she doesn't like it tell her thanks and move to hire another staff. Use the savings to try and keep some football coaches. I see no way OU will be elite again with the current staff in place..blast away if you want..

Sherri Coale has said this for years - and it's absolutely true. Generally speaking, you will go as far as your seniors will take you. We have some seniors who are simply inconsistent. That's why we're inconsistent. Want to know why we lost to Baylor? Look at the stat line from Maddie & Gabbi & Vivi after the first quarter.

This senior class is a good group. They are great people, have done a lot of nice things, and have all had some memorable games as Sooners. I have enjoyed watching all of them play. But they are not good enough on a consistent basis for us to compete as a top team.

We're just not good enough. I've come to that realization. It's not from a lack of effort, from a lack of coaching, or anything else. I don't look at our team and think "if Sherri would just do X, or would just do Y, we would be a lot better." She's tried everything over the last few years.

The problem is that we recruited a group of players who aren't good enough to win at the highest level. They are all good players and capable of winning, just not at the highest level. I wouldn't necessarily "trade" any of them. They are Sooners and have sacrificed in huge ways. They have represented the university incredibly well. They have excelled in the classroom.

I don't think it's because Sherri is lazy or a bad recruiter. I think the women's game has changed substantially over the last several years, and we are probably a little late to adjust. Having said that, Sherri actually takes the college experience seriously and expects a lot of her entire program - which is something that hinders our ability to compete in the changing women's game. She's going to have to find the right balance.

Sherri had some of these seasons right before we went on the Final Four binge. It just takes a couple of players to change everything. We haven't been able to land those program-changing players. I am confident we still can.

Sherri is a fabulous basketball coach. If she can land the right players, we will take off again. No question in my mind.

To each their own. It is universally agreed among fans that Mike Stoops needs to go as the football DC and his shortcoming more so than for any other reason is his lack of talent especially on the DL. He just does not have the Jimmy's and the Joe's to beat the top national teams.

Ditto for Sherri. She just does not have the Jane's and Jill's. If you look back at her entire 20 years she has recruited Stacey Dales, LaNeishea Caufield, Caton Hill, Amanda Thompson, Phylesha Whaley, Rosalind Ross, Dionnah Jackson, Leah Rush, Erin Higgins, Maria Villarroel, Chelsi Welch, Ashley Paris, Courtney Paris, Abi Olajuwon, Nyeshia Stevenson, Amanda Thompson, Danielle Robinson, Carlee Rothlisberger and Whitney Hand. That is 20 girls signed upto and through 2010.

Since 2010 she has signed Joanna McFarland, Aaryn Ellenberg, Nicole Griffin, Jacqueline Jeffcoat, Kaylon Williams, Nicole Kornet, Maddie Manning, Gabbi Ortiz, Vivi Pierre-Louis, Nancy Mulkey, Chelsea Dungee, Ana Llanusa and Shaina Pellington. Of those 13 about half have been a disappointment that failed to produce to expectations much less the level of the first list.

Note: Recruiting is one of the primary responsibilities of the head coach and failure to consistently recruit the quality players to compete on a conference level is a failure to do your job at an acceptable level.

Is there a timeline consistency between Ross's cancer and a general decline?

What makes a great coach. I can think of 3 obvious categorys. 1) Recruiting 2) x's and o's and 3) player development. Then they have to get the players to play together and execute.

I watch a lot of UConn games and I am convinced that Geno is an A in all of the above categories and in addition he is very demanding of his players and generally gets what he wants.

McGraw seems to be a very good recruiter and outstanding with x's and o's. Ditto Mulkey but maybe not as good as McGraw in player development. Kim's players seem to be about the same as they were as freshmen.

Aston is a good recruiter. Ditto the guy from Louisville. Haven't figured Dawn Staley out but I think she will keep South Carolina up there. Vandeveer is good overall and so is the guy from Oregon State. UCLA coach good recruiter period.

I will not try to evaluate Sherri. Too close to the program. She seems to excell in creating a family atmosphere but I don't know whether that is a plus or minus. I guess on balance probably a plus. I think her weakest point is player development. I also think she used to be better with that and maybe changes in her staff contribute. When I see Maddie and ViVi with over half of the turnovers in a game I suspect they are not working on improving there. I love the way that Gabbi hustles and rebounds for her size but she has not developed anything but an outside shot and even then she will go 2-10 one game and only get one or two shots off the next game.

I think the decline began when Stacy Hansmeyer left the program. Since her departure our recruiting has been going down to an "also ran" level, and each year our level of underachievement has become more pronounced.
I have attended almost every home game since the 2000 season, and have seen OU teams that overachieved by simply refusing to quit, be bullied, or out played. I have also seen teams that you can look at the bench and know it is over by halftime.
I have always been proud of the character of the young women that play basketball at OU, and never want this program to feel to become a top level team again it must recruit thugs, or those who must struggle to remain academically eligible. Who we need to get are those girls that hate to lose, the one that comes to mind is Amanda Thompson. She not only forced herself to overachieve but also made those around her work harder.
The team we have now is full of quality young women that will become valued members of any community they live in, but until we find a coach or player who truly hates to lose what we have had the last two seasons is the best we can hope for going forward.

You win understatement of the year ( it’s still January so anything can happen).

SC can’t get these girls to take an open shot. The inconsistency is beyond comprehension. The main consistency is dribbling and passing it around until the shot clock gets to 1 second.

The other consistency is maximizing turnovers.

I’n sure they are outstanding young women. They never get angry or upset, with themselves or their mates. Great attributes unless you need competitors. They play hard, but playing hard is just one part of competing. Making good decisions, having confidence and hating to lose are also key attributes. I don’t see any of those.

I just watched the post game press conference and, to say the least, Sherri and the players were, I thought totally mad about the game. I think the wee mostly mad each other.

This loss may have moved this team into more internal division and unhappiness. I thought Gabbi was just flat pissed and it seemed like some of was at Sherri.

If this game wasn’t a crossroads for this team the out come tomorrow night be. If we lose the next, I distinctly got the feeling the team might give up or at least crash and burn.
