OU vs Kansas St 6pm 3/1

Absolutely have to have this one and the larger the point differential, the better!

What a perfect microcosm of this senior class in a single game. Stretches of looking elite, stretches of looking incompetent, missing layups that would’ve made things much easier, 26 turnovers, but above all… some sooner magic and refusal to lose. Wouldn’t have sent them out any other way.

Poignant watching TRob be overcome with emotion after the game. She’s poured everything into this program.

I hope that wasn’t their last home game, but I fear it is. We need to win in Stillwater and at least make it to the championship game of the conference tournament to get a top 4 seed.

There were things to be disappointed in and things to be proud of in this game.

The disappointments:

KSU has a lot of players who are long and we never seemed to adjust to their length. That caused a lot of our turnovers.

We lost focus and relaxed too much after we got our big lead in the first half.

I'm not sure who was responsible for guarding Gregory early in the second half but they lost her in transition too much.

Scott Yarborough was one of the officials but that's a discussion for another day.

Things to be proud of:

We never quit or lost our confidence or our composure.

The play we ran to tie up the game! Was that what Jennie drew up or just ad-libbing on the part of Madi and Skylar?

One thing I know. They have to play better in Stillwater on Saturday.

I’m dreading Saturday.

I so want these women to get a great Big 12 tournament and NCAA tournament seeding.

They have frankly been through so much crap they absolutely deserve it.

Seeing T-Rob break down really got to me.

We are guaranteed the 2nd seed in the Big 12 tournament. According to my interpretation of the tiebreaker rules, if both ISU and Bayor win this weekend Baylor will be the #4 seed. That would put Baylor in the same bracket with Texas and we would be in the bracket with ISU. We will have the 2 seed even if we lose to the pukes. But if we lose to pukes and both Baylor and ISU win, then fosu, ISU and Baylor will tie for 3rd place. I do not know how that would work tiebreaker-wise to see who gets the 4th seed.

I would prefer Baylor to get the 4th seed so we would not have to play both Baylor and Texas.

That play had to have been drawn up by Jennie. When Skylar inbounded the ball to Madi, she immediately ran straight past Madi and toward the bucket. Madi never hesitated and tossed the ball right back to the streaking Skylar for the layup. It was a thing of beauty.

Jennie talks about that play in this article. It was a beautiful play.

OU fights off upset-minded Kansas State in OT

Eric Bailey Mar 1, 2023

Oklahoma guard Skylar Vann (24) and guard Taylor Robertson (30) celebrate after beating Baylor in an NCAA college basketball game on Jan. 12, 2022, in Norman.

NORMAN – Oklahoma’s Taylor Robertson wiped away a few tears shortly before the overtime portion of Wednesday night’s 90-86 win against Kansas State.

Did she have tears of joy or tears of relief? Why was OU’s star guard emotional before the critical part of the Big 12 contest?

“I was just happy that we got the game into overtime because obviously we didn’t want to lose,” Robertson said after the victory, a wide grin now displaying her emotional status. “It was a mix of happiness and also ‘all right, we got to lock back in and get ready to play.’”

The No. 16 Sooners celebrated Senior Night in thrilling style with the comeback win against the upset-minded Wildcats. OU built a 22-point lead early in the second quarter and then had to erase a four-point deficit with 28 seconds remaining to earn the triumph.

The game script ended with a joyous celebration highlighted by postgame comments from the three players who have spent either six years (Ana Llanusa) or five years (Madi Williams and Robertson) playing for the crimson-and-cream.

The game almost turned into a somber salute after Oklahoma blew an early 22-point second-quarter lead and had to find a way to overcome a four-point deficit in the final 28 seconds.

But this senior group helped find a way to leave the LNC with an important Big 12 victory.

Could this be their final game inside their home arena? There remains the possibility to host an NCAA Tournament regional if there is a positive outcome at OSU and a good showing in next week’s conference tournament in Kansas City.

Llanusa was asked last week about her team’s potential title run.

“It would mean a lot for the whole team, but all three of us especially. We’ve faced a lot of adversity together,” Llanusa said. “And I just think it’d be awesome to finish with that … we’ve been focusing on growing and each day being 1% better than we were the other day. I think if we focus on that, if it falls in our lap, that’d be great.”

The K-State game that seemed destined for a blowout early and developed into a late nail-biter for crimson-and-cream clad fans.

OU scored 19 unanswered points to take a 30-8 lead early in the second quarter, but had to weather a fierce K-State comeback led by a familiar face.

Gabby Gregory, a Holland Hall graduate, spent the past three seasons playing for the Sooners before transferring to Kansas State during the off-season. She scored all 16 of her points following halftime to help the visitors seize a 77-73 lead with 28 seconds in regulation.

Kansas State would miss three of four free throws from that point, opening the door for the Sooners.

The Sooners trailed 78-76 when Vann inbounded the ball to Madi Williams from the sideline. Williams returned the ball to Vann, who hit a driving layup with 1.4 seconds left to send the contest into overtime.

“There were multiple options (out of the play) and that was the first read,” Baranczyk said. “Skylar did a phenomenal job. It was a great pass. Our spacing was good.”

Even as the calendar tears off to March, there’s still teaching moments as OU heads into college basketball’s most important month.

“It’s good to have these kinds of games where you come back and you have to find a way to win and you have to find different ways to be able to do it,” the OU coach said. “And, at the same time, I think it’s a huge lesson to remember at halftime that it is 0-0.”

The Sooners led 45-29 at intermission.

“Hopefully we can learn from that,” Baranczyk said. “We were a little bit on our heels and a little too hopeful in the third quarter. We needed to do a much better job of being aggressive. They were the aggressor and we needed to be the aggressor.

“In order for us to continue to go and play as well as we were capable of playing, that’s a major lesson you’ve got to learn as we come out of this.”

Vann, who had six of the team’s dozen points in OT, finished with a team-high 23 points. Williams (19 points), Robertson (15), Liz Scott (11) and Llanusa ended in double figures.

During that VERY lengthy review before that play where we tied it to end regulation, our team came out of the huddle smiling and I knew we had the perfect play.

I have been saying for 2-3 years I thought Madi was the best ladies' player in the Country. Lately, I have been screaming for Jennie to take her out of the game when it is late and close. Her judgment has just be inexplicably poor in late game situations. This had never been the case before that I can remember. She is a walking unforced turnover lately. What is going on with her -- anyone know?

Like everyone else I was moved by T-Rob's emotion. You forget sometimes what these kids put into an OU sporting career and what it means to them. She is completely unathletic, but the best outside shooter I have ever seen. And unlike a lot of scorers she is completely unselfish and a team first player. Great kid. In fact, all of our seniors should be commended for great careers and being great sooners. Madi came and stuck around when we were down, Ana has had so many injuries and surgeries I have lost count and T-Rob, well what can you say, she is basically a legend now.

This team was the worst defensive team I had ever seen on the collegiate level early in the year. There has been crazy improvement. So, good on Jenny. They still aren't great on defense, but I think they are about as good as their talent will allow them to be.

While I agree that her lapses in judgement and missed layups are perplexing at times, she deserves credit for making the perfect pass/read on the play where we tied it. It will always be better to have her on the court than off.

And yes, it's easy to get emotional thinking about this senior class. The amount of adversity they faced is unmatched -- a billion losses, injuries galore for Ana, COVID (including only having 6 available players at times), a coaching change, etc -- and in this transfer portal era, they could've left and gone absolutely anywhere they wanted, but they didn't. They stayed because they love each other and they wanted to complete the turnaround of this program. I'll always appreciate them for that, even more than their packed resumes.

To say T-Rob is 'completely unathletic' is a stretch.

She’s athletic enough to be the greatest 3-point shooter in college women’s basketball history.

She may a bit slow, but she makes up for that with sheer tenacity and determination to be a better defensive player every minute of every game.

If I was a coach, I’d want 15 Taylor Robertsons on my team!

15 girls with TRob's mental makeup and effort perhaps. But 15 girls with her athleticism would make for a losing season. You still win basketball games with the Jimmies and the Joes.

And when the OU fandom begins to think we have that skill set we play the whorns or Utah and we see the need for athleticism immediately.

I would say T-Rob is an average athlete with an above-average basketball IQ.

Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions!

I agree with MsProud on this one. Actually I think the drop off between T-Rob and Joens will not be that great. It appears to me that Joens is better on defense and has more offensive weapons than T-Rob. Of course Joens currently has the advantage of coming in on relief.

I do not think there will be much of a drop off either between Madi and Skylar. The problem will be not having those two coming off the bench. Regardless I am really looking forward to seeing how they do next year.
