OU vs. WVU - Maddie Injured?

Team could have folded big time.
That's a big time come from behind win.
Nice to see Peyton Little have a big game.
Great effort and execution in the 2nd half.

T'ona made a major difference in the game with her hustle and defense. Several turnovers and several OU defensive rebounds were caused by her tipping the ball out of the hands of WV and picked up by us. She also had a great assist to Gabbi to put us in the lead. Stats do not show the impact she had on the game.
It was a baaaad start; lack of focus, lack of energy, and lack of any rhythm. But you certainly appreciate the effort and the win from the 2nd half (and late second quarter) comeback.

Terrific fight this second half. I just don't understand why we can't get going from the tip.

Turnovers are a big factor.

They went into a pressing zone and WV came apart at the seams.

I remember Billy Tubbs saying he liked to make defensive changes in the second half rather than the first half because the offense didn't have as much time to make adjustments. I suspect that's especially true when the offense has lots of inexperienced players.

I am sure everyone else knows what you mean but I am not sure. Do you mean their offense not having experienced players or ours?

Anyway, I can see that in some situations that can be a good idea. I don't know if it would be in all situations. Like you wouldn't want to get down too far
or if you are shooting really poorly and getting out-rebounded. I guess the coach just decides on what she/he knows about the two teams and also a best guess.

But what a second half. Wish I could have seen it. Hope this turns Peyton's season around. Not that she has to play this well every game but would nice to see her play pretty much like this. From listening to what she did, I would guess her confidence, tightness, fear of making a mistake or whatever improved that second half and we just need that from her. Last year, to me,
she seemed to play without fear of making a mistake.

Back from the game with random thoughts:

Those Native American dancers at halftime really put the hex on WVA

We played defense at 33 1/3 rpm in the first half; 78 rpm in the second

Carter is what we needed - a player that could create off the dribble and make the mid-range jumper. Then Stu started channeling her in the third quarter.

I thought we made a tactical error down the stretch trying to run down the clock with ball in Edwards' hands. She'd start to make a move with 9 seconds left, but defense knew she couldn't score herself. I don't think we got any points off that.

I was thinking "Speed kills, and we don't have any". Then came the second half!

WVU has lots of new players this year. I think they said 7 freshmen and 2 or 3 transfers.

When Peyton finally broke out, she did it in style. We had almost nothing going for us, and we needed that second half. She was as good as I have seen her in the second half.

Without Maddie, we have a bit of a problem. T"Ona and Gabbi aren't offensive threats out of a set. We either have to score from the post or from three.

We shot 37.9%, 23.1% from three (hit only three), had eight fewer rebounds, and won. Turnovers: WV 31 OU 21. Thirty-one will get you beat.

not understanding, we can't have gioya get two point jumper out of a set

also, why do we not move more? I was listening to the game and their offense was constantly on the move and passing the ball and we didn't seem to be doing that and rarely do.....opinion anyone?

Okay, thought that was what you meant (that it was their inexperienced offensive players, because that was what made sense) but never I never know what I DON'T know so wanted to be sure. THX

I thought it was a tactical error trying to run down the clock at that point in the game. I thought we should have tried to run some offense. We didn't necessarily have to shoot it early but if something really good opened up, then why not. Or have a play called to run it down and do something then or maybe a few seconds before but don't leave it up to T'ona to score, rather have a play that could open up a couple of players that are shooters.

Agreed! Hoping Peyton is out of the slump. Happy to see her hit some shots. Also hoping Maddie pulls through this injury fast. We definitely needed her. We looked out of sorts the first half, as we have been doing a lot lately. Just glad they snapped out of it. On to the next!

Your first point is right. Both Gioya and Stu were scoring out of the dribble.

As to your second point, my view at the game was it was a tale of two halves. In the second, we were moving freely and our defense had their movement totally stifled.

thanks, sometimes you can get perspectives from the radio announcers that you wouldn't get from being there but, of course, seeing it in person can also often be a superior way to know what is going on

Absolutely no doubt about it. The win was due to the American Indian Dancers. They promised their dance was designed to change the nature of the game, and no one can argue it did not succeed.

Sherri needs to have them at every game - but pregame - not halftime.

Before long, the opponents will just forfeit and get back on the bus.

Ok, obviously just teasing - but it was entertaining ........ and it certainly seemed to work. :)

I thought that by the middle of the third quarter we had taken away the confidence of the WV players, both on their shooting, and on moving the ball. 31 turn overs I believe, and starters plus Vivi playing good defense. Gioya and T'Ona especially put pressure on ball handlers, and the pressure made them tentative in everything they did. It showed not only on the players on the court, but the coaches and players on the bench. Zone D worked well.
We did make a tactical mistake in trying to "kill" the clock late rather than just be deliberate and run our offense-it allowed WV to become the aggressor.
But with dancers help we prevailed.

We changed our defense to a zone just before halftime, and it was clearly working. So in the second half we went back to it - and it completely confused WV. That was the key to the game, along with Peyton's marvelous play.

Let's all be honest and give Sherri the credit she deserves.

That's exactly how I saw it! :)

It is interesting what the stats keeper saw. I think he gave some of T'Ona's steals to Gioya, and some of Gioya's turnovers to T'Ona. Edwards and Peyton were the keys to our coming back. Gioya helped. But, it was Tiny's defense, and Peyton's timely shooting. It seemed that Tiny must have tipped ten or fifteen balls of which we recovered seven or eight that gave us the opportunity for a comeback.

When you remember what happened against Washington and TCU, it would appear that T'Ona needs to be on the floor when we mount a comeback.

We played WV's game in the first half. We dictated the game in the second. Last year, we let them define the game in Morgantown, but we defined the games in Norman and OKC. Team in control wins.
