Player improvement under Capel

The can't win without Blake argument is totally bogus.

Capel has only coached 4 seasons and Blake was here two of them. His first season he took over a total train wreck of a program mired in probation and all the recruits jumped ship. He builds the program over the next 2 seasons by bringing in 4 McDonalds AAs. His 4th year he loses all of his veterans, his best returning player is a soph who gets hurt and he is trying to play with 4 true freshmen 2 of which are playing to get to the next level instead of the team.

So here we are in year 5. The probation is finally over but he has to start over with 8 new faces. He has assembled a pretty good team already they are just young and weak inside until 2 of his new big men join next year.

His new foundation is rock solid and it will be no surprise if next year is just like his 2nd year with a team headed to the tournament.

O yeah, Capel just won the Fiba Americans Under 18 championship this summer and Blake Griffin wasn't on that team.

You think they hand over Team USA coaching jobs to any deadbeat? The Capel can't win without Blake argument is put forth by trolls.

Quoted for truth.

This is a great post, but I'm sure it will get ripped.

The problem more lies in Capel's ability to hang on to players, which is where his Blake Griffin argument rings true on his inability to win without Blake. Capel has become a victim of constant turnover and he has lacked the ability to compensate for that. I think a lot of the blame for the constant turnover in personal has to fall on Capel's shoulders. He's the one recruiting this kids so he has to/needs to have an idea what risk he takes with some of them. So if he's going to recruit risky players who could leave him he better learn how to manage them and so far I don't think he's proven he can do that. He's going to have to change that if he wants to save his job.

Exactly. I feel the same way when looking at Capel.

Its not a question of development with Capel; his players have shown they improve under his watch.

The problem is the volatile style the program has been accustomed to, with many expected key role players deciding to transfer over the years (Early, Neismith, Maze, Patillo, etc). This ultimately falls on Capel, as its apparent that he underestimated the importance of factoring in a player's character when recruiting them. I think he has learned this lesson which is why I am still optimistic that he can turn this mess around and get OU back on the right track. Whether he is here to dig himself out of the mess he got into remains to be seen.

Ok so you want those guys to stick around and be cancers or drag others down. If they were acting foolish and didnt deserve a scholie any longer. Then that is what is best for the team and OU. But you are right, lets try and get better kids in the first place!

No, that's not what I was saying. At all.

This is what I was saying.

I understand. Sometimes when you only see a kid on the court and inhis living room. Character issues may not be showing up. But hopefully Capel will live and learn!

Thats an argument I am starting to agree with but I don't think its mutual with the thread.

If you look at Capel, players that do stay for multiple years tend to make good steps under Capel. Look at Tony Crocker, when he got here he was just an ok shooter, left pretty good off the bounce and a good defender. I think Capel with time can develop players pretty well.

I think Crocker was a solid player here but here is his stat line:

Season
GP-GS FG% 3FG% FT% RPG A B S PPG
2006-07 31-25 .450 .357 .741 3.7 55 10 26 8.6
2007-08 35-34 .441 .424 .723 3.8 68 6 29 11.3
2008-09 36-36 .394 .349 .772 3.2 50 7 36 9.6
2009-10 30-30 .410 .328 .736 6.2 51 15 32 11.4

Just not alot of progression over 4 years.

Longar got better but I think his progress was due to coach kline. Capel needs a top recruiting assistant to land the type of players OU needs to compete with the top teams in the big 12.

Being with a group of kids for a few weeks and winning a tournement doesn't make a good coach in my eyes. I also don't know the level of competition they were up against. Its nice to see but to be honest I don't care to see what he does away from OU. I am a fan of OU not Capel, but thats not to say I don't want Capel to succeed.

I can't figure Capel out. Like others, I don't know what his style is offensively, defensively, substitution patterns, or recruiting wise. The current group of newcomers has plenty room for improvement. If Capel doesn't get some measureable level of improvement out of these guys, then I don't think Capel will ever get it done.

Not a troll but thanks for noticing. I just think people are getting too excited about beating ORU.

His stat line stayed the same because at his best Tony was a role player type, not trying to knock Tony as we sure could him this year.

If you watched Tony throughout his Sooner career the development of facets of his game can not be denied. When he came here he was just a streaky shooting skinny 2/3 type. As late of his junior year I remember ciringing when he drove the lane "Going why Tony?" as he would usually turn it over or miss it badly. His senior season he actually had improved so much that he actually inspired some confiedence in me when he attacked the rim. Then his defense become pretty good as he got older, just ask Manny Harris an all big 10 player in the NCAA tournament.

Tony never developed into some amazing superstars but he did become a pretty good four year player for the Sooners who actually had a good offensive aresnal and a scrappy defender when he left. I like to think Capel's coaching played a role in that. I'm sure though some Capel detractors will argue that any player who plays 30 minutes a game over 4 years will improve as long as he cares, but whatever.

Somebody must of thought he was a pretty good coach to let him coach this team... They arent just grabbing morons on the sidelines and saying here take a vacation for 2 weeks and coach some bball....

I will take what I have seen over Capel's entire tenure at OU over what he did for a few weeks during the summer.

I guess your just forgetting the successful years? Or you one that says... BG coached this team, Capel just stood and watched!

Can understand one or two instances where that happens; every program deals with that.

But when its a recurring theme of kicking players off, then I don't think its an anomalous situation any longer; I think it clearly reflects on the coaching staff.

Like I said though, I think (and am hoping) Capel has ultimately learned from this.

Would you have liked Capel keeping, Early, Neismith, Juan, etc...?
If they werent doing right? Im sure they were somewhat model citizens in HS, but we both know TONS of kids, athletes or not, CHANGE when they leave their home for the first time! Kids who were good christian church goers, turn into the party going, sleeping around etc... you know where im going with that!

Capel has had 2 successful seasons. Both were with Blake. Currently this program is not headed up. Anyone who says differently just isn't paying attention. Whether or not its bad luck or bad coaching, it is still ultimately Capel's responsibility.

Character issues aside, some of his recruits just could not play. I still remember watching Neismith during warmups and his shot having sideways rotation!
