Polla arrival

I just watched Finland's game against Poland where Poland won 68-61 but it was a 2 point game with a little over a minute left. Again, I thought Polla had a good game but has some things to work on.

Highlights/comments:
- He scored 21 points in the game including 14 in the 4th quarter when Finland was making a comeback.
- I really like his free throw form. He was 7-9 from the line and shoots kind of 2-hand shot with really nice spin.
- He scores on the first play of the game on a pick and roll and converts the free throw for a 3-point play. He sets good screens and then rolls to the basket.... and they didn't him feed enough off that play.
- He had a nice 2-hand dunk on an inbound play in the 1st half.
- He's a better shot blocker than I expected. He doesn't sky like Lattin and McNeace but just his sheer size helps him on blocks.... he had 4-5 blocks in this game and times them well. He doesn't go for a lot of pump fakes like Khadeem sometimes does. He alters a lot of shots. He did get a flagrant foul for hammering a kid on a block attempt.
- He has a funny build. Some players have long legs and a small torso. He has a massive torso.
- His 3rd quarter was a stinker. He fumbled away several easy passes where he could have had a pretty easy shot. His hands aren't the greatest.
- I really like the form on his baby hook shot that he can take with either hand.
- He posts up deep on the block and they couldn't move him out, but Finland didn't take advantage of it enough until the 4th quarter.
- His 4th quarter was awesome.

I honestly think he will help the Sooners this season. He's a different kind of center than Lattin and McNeace. I could even see them playing some power forward with Polla at the 5. He can sure clog up the middle and not get pushed around. I agree with MisterF in that he kind of reminds me of a bigger Kevin Bookout. He's going to be a monster a year from now after a year in the weight room. He's pretty strong now as it is.... except for his hands.

For anyone who wants to watch the game, here's the link. I just dragged the bar forward when he wasn't in the game so it didn't take a lot of time to watch. No need to watch them play both national anthems, halftime, or timeouts. It was kind of fun watching with no commentary.

I see I wasn't high about that #13 from the Armenian team. It's center Steve Enoch from Univ of Louisville. I can see why. wow.

Yeah, Enoch was a top 50 recruit in the 2015 class. Played 2 years at Uconn. Was in 29 games last season, starting 3. He would likely start for them next season but didn't like Ollie's guard oriented system, so he's transferring to Louisville. He's no slouch for a kid just getting out of HS to play against.

boy you're not kidding there. that enoch has all the athleticism in the world. he's just not dominant. darn skilled though.

Well I watched Finland's game against Belgium, and they were beaten pretty badly. Polla had a terrible game. He looked a step slow on defense and couldn't finish on offense. He ended the game with just 3 points. It was the 2nd game in a row where he was called for a flagrant foul. It happened with 6:48 left in the 3rd quarter and he may have been kicked out of the game, but I think it was a coach's decision to bench him for the rest of the game. No doubt he hammered the guy. I'm guessing he only played 12-13 minutes out of 40 in the game, but his minutes were limited by his poor play.

He isn't very strong on the boards and again his hands don't seem "soft". He loses a lot of rebounds to guards knocking the ball loose. I guess the silver lining is they won't be one of the top 2 teams in pool play, so Wednesday will be his last game before joining the Sooners.

If anyone is interested, here is the game link:

Usetobe1 that's disappointing to read. Thanks for all your coverage of him. Didn't you give some positive reviews of him after the first couple of games? How do you feel overall after this bad game?

I still want to watch the last quarter of the Poland game but:

He appears to handle the ball well and pass well. has good court awareness. Should pick up the systems quickly. I spite of the ball handling he does not appear to have good hands, maybe strong hands. This shows up with his rebounding. Seems to lose on a lot of them that he should get.

He seems to move well for his size and in spite of the hands problem also appears to have a good touch. This particularly shows up on free throws. But he has a long way to go with his inside shots. Seems to have trouble finishing. The hook shot has good possibilities but accuracy poor now.

The most unique part of his game is his defense and shot blocking ability. His timing is really good on the blocks in spite of the flagrant fouls. This is really important because even if he does not contribute much on offense he will not hurt the team on defense.

Not sure he will ever start but should at least be a solid backup.

POLLA looks like a slow big guy that is not vey quick, jump high... HE appears to require help in many areas. He may get to play a littlein 2 yrs

You guys are hard on him. He is going to help ou. He is young, playing on an all star team.

He brings a physical presence that neither Lattin or McNeace can do. I'm betting he gets 10 minutes/game in the non-conference games. He's playing against good competition in the European U20 tournament on a team with not real good guard play. For example, Finland has a population of about 5.5mm versus Poland with 38mm so they don't have the players to choose from.

I see Polla as a physical, low post player. He gets good position on the inside. His hands aren't great and he isn't fast, but he has some good moves. He's really strong. I think in practices with the Sooners over the next 2-3 months he will adapt to the speed of the game, and think he will contribute this season. I can even see at times when the Sooners choose to go big, he could play the 5 with Lattin or McNeace at the 4 and Doolittle or Odomes at the 3.

The guy is a better player than you're giving him credit for in my humble opinion. Time will tell.

I think the goal for Polla is to be like Karnowski for Gonzaga the last several years. He was a big bodied center who didn't stretch the floor or lead the break, but they built a defense around him even with out big shot blocking ability.

He was about 7' 300 lbs, and averaged basically 10-12 pts & 5-7 rebounds every year there, with a block, 55-60% shooting.

Didn't light up the stat sheet, didn't do anything special, but was a key piece in them going to a sweet 16, elite 8 and championship game his last 3 years there.

He will be a good practice player. Our bigs definitely need to be better against 260# players.

I watched the game. Polla was in foul trouble and eventually fouled out, but he wouldn't have gotten a lot more minutes because Finland beat the snot out of Belarus by 45 points. I thought he played well. He passes well and sets good screens. He knows how to post up and seems to always have a body on someone inside. He did hit a nice little hook shot and about a 15 footer from the elbow. He scored 2-3 buckets on post ups where he had his defender on his hip. I also like his free throw form.

I watched all 4 of his games in the tournament, and I think he will help OU this season. He has some strengths that Lattin and McNeace don't have. He's not quick or a big jumper but is strong as a bull in the post. He's a big man. They need a physical low post player.

Who would you compare him to? Bookout, cole aldrich, slightly smaller ostertag?

It's tough to compare a kid just out of HS to those 3 guys. Aldrich and Ostertag played in the NBA for a long time. Polla is bigger than Bookout. He's about the same size as Aldrich, and much smaller than Ostertag.

I probably lean to comparing him more to Bookout partly because I followed Kevin closer than the other 2 guys. He's not as good now as the Bookout I remember as a senior..... but I didn't expect he would be. Polla has good basketball IQ and will help the Sooners. They have similar athletic abilities, but Polla is a true throwback center.

I know Bookout wasn't as tall as Pöllä, but wasn't he a bit bulkier? Or is my memory failing me?
