Every practice Bennett shows up as a solid defender and rebounder. He blocks and alters shots and deflects passes. Today he got some scoring going. Cousins found him down low twice with some nifty passes. He scored both of those and beat Cam with a good post move on one of them. He had three put backs for scores. One of them was one of those one handed slam downs. The crowd of 50+ appreciated it. He did flare out once and got open for a shot at the elbow. It looked gosh awful.

There is no way to sugar coat it. Woodard and Booker have just not shot well through these first five practices. Booker some the better of the two. But, he is still well below the sharp shooter he was advertised to be. They are freshmen.

The white team was Hornbeak, Cousins, Buddy, Cam and Bennett. The five on five was pretty one sided. That group defended well and the red's had a hard time all evening.

Cam was really good today. He shot well and probably scored the most. He looked like a good defender with the group he was playing with. Buddy was scoring and playing well on both sides of the ball again today. Cousin had another good practice. He may have had his best shooting day so far. His shot still doesn't look very fluid. As of now it might be hard to predict how consistent he is going to be. Hornbeak was fine again.

Execution seems to be getting some better every day. Of course, that is what practice is suppose to accomplish. There was more work again today on applying and breaking full court pressure. They make it look easy in practice. Hopefully that issue will be resolved before the regular season starts.

They were using a European ball in practice today. It is striped and seemed to be slicker. Some of the players had to go through a little adjustment. After the trip they will go back to one two hour practice a week till mid October. After the summer fix, at least it won't be cold turkey.

Looks like maybe the starting five might be shaking out.

Put Spangler in for Bennett and I think you have got it. At least for now. Woodard is going to be a good point guard. But, Hornbeak is currently the best all around player.

Still gotta think Spangler is one of the starting five though.

Gary, thoughts?

Edit: Nevermind, you responded while I was typing. Thx.

Good stuff, Gary! Looks like the starting five as well as the first two or three guys off of the bench are beginning to take shape. I realize that could change going forward with more practice sessions and the European games just ahead.

If I'm interpreting your report correctly, the two freshmen guards are struggling to adjust to the speed and physicality of the college game, while the returning players are taking full advantage of their experience. I still believe Woodard and Booker will play major roles in our rotation as the season progresses. I'm fairly sure you will agree with that assessment on Woodard. What are your thoughts on Booker? Aside from making his shots, what does he need to work on to be an important part of our rotation?

Your thoughts seem about right to me. Woodard is skilled and time will get him to a good place. Booker is a tough kid and he will get better. Their adjustment has been rocky and the older players are taking advantage. Booker is really having trouble defending the quicker guards. He looks pretty average when they are in one on one or two on two drills. They are getting him good in open space. But, in 5 on 5 he gets along a little better.
