NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head men's basketball coach Lon Kruger announced today that sophomore guard Calvin Newell has decided to transfer.

Newell, from Philadelphia, Pa., was OU's second-leading scorer this season at 13.0 points per game.

"I met with Coach Kruger this morning and told him I've been dealing with issues regarding my family the past few months and that I've felt distracted lately," said Newell. "I feel I need to get back closer to home and that's why I've made this decision."

Newell added, "I like this team a lot and I know they'll do well. I'll be cheering them on."

"We'll definitely miss Calvin," said Kruger. "He's been a key contributor this season and a guy who's scored the basketball for us. However, I respect his decision and the issues he's facing, and certainly wish him the best."

In addition to his 13.0 points, Newell averaged 1.6 rebounds in 19.6 minutes per contest in OU's five games this season, helping the team to a 4-1 start. He shot .490 from the field (25-for-51), .385 from 3-point range (10-for-26) and .714 from the free throw line (5-for-7).

Newell led the Sooners in scoring twice this year, finishing with a career-high 19 points in the season opener against Idaho State and 18 points in last week's win over Washington State in OU's first game of the 76 Classic.

As a freshman last year, Newell averaged 3.5 points and 1.5 assists in 12.5 minutes a game.

Sad. Hate it for him and us!

Good luck to you Mr. Newell, and good luck to the Sooners and LK. Tough break when the start of the season was actually looking good. The NCAA took it easy on us, we were winning games, things were looking up, and this turd was dropped on us. Ah well, we can handle! BOOMER!

Guys we need to pray for this young man as he has a lot on his plate right now. It is tough enough for us to lose a love one but to lose two in a short time, two people who he loved dearly, his mom and grandmother who most likely were a big part of his life and the direction he took. Let's not look at what it might or might not do for this team but let's look at what it will do for young Mr. Newell's future and his life.

I wish him nothing but the best and thank him for what he has done for our team and I really hope he is allowed to continue his education in a place of comfort.

God Bless Calvin Newell and his family!:OUbball-logo:
