Rank the Big 12 coaches (including Tubby)

The other thing I can't figure out is why everyone has Scott Drew so low. In the last 5 years, he's played for two NIT titles (won one) and been to the Elite Eight of the Dance twice. Considering where Baylor was in the college hoops landscape prior to his arrival, they should have a statue of Drew. We all know he's a mediocre bench coach, but last I checked, recruiting is a big part of coaching.

I think his recruiting is based on cheating so I discount it entirely. I have no proof of this, I simply don't believe Scott Drew, a goofy Yankee, moved to Texas to take over one of the worst programs in the country and got all these super talented local kids to attend a Baptist school in Waco Texas.

So, what your saying is that every coach that has won a national title, is better than every coach that hasn't. Is that right? If it is, are you sure you want to stick with that theory?

Did I say that???? NO! Smith is a winner and has had success at every program he has coached.

agree. when we fired Capel, i would have taken Tubby Smith in oh hell yeah sort of way. my Big 10 peeps (tedious people)....say Tubby underacheived at Minny this year....but still. Minnesota basketball isn't exactly legendary.

i'm just curious what makes Scott Drew a "yankee"....he was born in Kansas City and his dad coached at Valpo. not he's like he's from Connecticut or Boston. i don't like the guy and think he's average as a coach and probably dirty as the day is long....but i'm not sure what calling him a "yankee" in Waco means as a proof-pudding criticism of his coaching acumen.

he's a lot of success....fwiw.

point out anyone banging on Tubby....Tubby was SEC coach of the year 3 times. in 98 (OK, Pitino's guys)....but also in 2003 and 2005. Tubby's guys.

jus sayin.

I dont base my list on what these guys did 10-20 years ago. My list is how I would rank these coaches RIGHT NOW. 10 years ago Tubby, Huggins, Kruger and Barnes would be higher than they are now.

My top 3 and bottom 3 were easy. 4-7 could be in any order.

1. Self - no doubter. In the NCAA tourney he is easily the best coach on this list.
2. Hoiberg - this guy has it going right now. If I were an ISU grad I would be in heaven.
3. Weber - That KSU roster was the weakest I can remember to win the big 12. Easy choice for coach of the year this year.
4. Huggins - teams are good every year. I dont like him but he even got this WVU team with no talent to compete. They just had no firepower.
5. Barnes - Was #2 on this list 2-3 years ago. But struggling big time right now.
6. Tubby - big name, will improve Tech the next few years. Wouldnt have minded if OU had hired him either of the last 2 chances they had.
7. Kruger - average recruiter, solid regular season coach, good guy, 0-3 in Big 12 tourney and NCAA tourney at OU. Lots of 1st round exits in NCAA lately in over career.
8. Johnson - Dont know much about him but I'd rather have him than Ford/Drew. =)
9. Ford - decent recruiter, bad coach. Runs off talented players non-stop. Just wasted his chance at a big year. Had good talent this year in a weak league and did nothing. He was 0 for 3 this year. Didnt win regular season title, didnt make it to finals in big 12 tourney and didnt do anything in NCAA tourney.
10. Drew - His miserable coaching negates his great recruiting/cheating.

I think it's safe to say that anyone who uses the term "yankee" as an insult doesn't have an opinion worth considering anyway.

I incorrectly thought or assumed Valaparasio was in the northeast. To me it is even less likely that someone from the northeast could move to Central Texas and recruit at a high level because they speak differently. When we travel to the northeast they think we speak funny. When they travel to Oklahoma or Texas we think they speak funny. I think that difference would make it even more difficult to recruit. Generally people are must comfortable with a person that is similar to them.

I learned today it is in Indiana but I really don't think that changes much. He is still likely going to have a regional accent that is noticable to a person in Texas and he still probably lacked a strong local network when he first came to Texas.

I call him goofy based on his sloppy appearance during games along with his theatrics. Compare Drew's game antics to Hoiberg and that difference is what I am calling goofy.

Drew has been to the elite 8 twice and has won the NIT. He also took Baylor from the dump and made them household name.

Wining the NIT is like being the world's tallest midget. Big deal

2. Hoiberg
3. Kruger
4. Tubby
5. Weber
6. Barnes
7. Huggins

8.Drew
9.Ford
10.Johnson

He's also had at least 3 teams with Sweet Sixteen (at least) talent that missed the NCAA Tournament. This year is a great example.

I agree that the separation between 2 and 7 is minimal...however, I don't think you can put Hoiberg above Kruger, Tubby, Weber, Barnes AND Huggins. If he keeps up his current pace, you'll have no argument from me, but he's three years into his coaching career with 62 total wins. He is a VERY good coach, and certainly in the discussion with those coaches...but:

Those 5 coaches have a combined 2,640 wins, an average of 528 wins each. They also have 13 Sweet Sixteen appearances, 8 Elite Eights, 3 Final Fours, and 2 championship games, including one NCAA champion.

He might have had two good seasons, but against that class of coaches he's got to earn his spot with more than two good season.

1. Self

2. Huggins (719-279 all time with 2 Final Fours)
3. Tubby
4. Barnes
5. Kruger
6. Weber
7. Hoiberg

mine probably is too reactionary.. but im a fan of hoibergs and my list was more of my current thoughts. thanks i agree with most of what you say too

I'm still not sure how anyone can defend Rick Barnes, when what he as accomplished with the talent he has had and the built in structural advantages of coaching at the University of Texas is so pathetic. He is one of the worst coaches in the nation, much less the conference.
