Record Under Capel

bgrch, that old "cupboard was bare when Capel arrived" claim doesn't play too well when you take a careful inventory of the group Sampson left behind.

Nate Carter had some pretty good teammates in Capel's first year. David Godbold, Taylor Griffin, Austin Johnson, Michael Neal and Longar Longar were on that team. Capel brought in Bobby Maze, to go along with Keith Clark and Tony Crocker as the only two Sampson signees who remained committed to the LOI they signed. Losing Reynolds and James was huge. But it's not like he didn't inherit a solid base of players to build from in 2007.

KS left so much talent we were picked 9th by the league coaches in '06.

Crocker, Clark and Maze....all freshmen. If our stud freshman Cameron Clark (higher ranked recruit) struggled quite a bit, don't see why you expect more from three unproven guys who are no where near James and Reynolds' level.

Michael Neal was injured the entire season on his shooting hand, let's not forget this.

Nate Carter had talent, Capel didn't play him much the first part of the year then let him run wild during conference...funny thing is we still lost with him logging more minutes and scoring, it's a wash.

The pantry wasn't empty by any means, but that still wasn't a very good team considering the defections and what not. Great, so they eek out a few more wins and become a borderline NIT team, probably lose in the first round and people would still call for a change right now.

I remember when Ron Franklin called Skeeter Henry "Scooter McHenry".

I'm not saying that Kelvin left us with a ready-made team of world beaters. But to be perfectly honest, I would take that team in a heartbeat over the one we had this year.

That's not to suggest that we were totally void of talent or that the players we have coming back next season won't be better. I'm simply saying that Capel has some pretty salty players to work with in his first season as OU's head coach. So, the notion that Sampson left him with a team of talent-challenged players is not even close to an accurate statement.

T.Griffin as a sophmore was nothing to brag about. AJ was always hurt. Longar was nothing before Capel got his hands on him. Carter didn't shine til the end.

I'm glad you actually think that the 06 team was just amazing. Some of you can't separate the Taylor Griffin and AJ of 06 from the one of 08 just like how you all expect our players on the current roster to not get any better.

Kevin Bookout said Sampson would have gotten that team to the NCAA tourney. Is he right? I don't know, but I figure he knows more than me.

In any case, I don't think anyone's trying to pump up the talent on the 2007 squad, but it has been consistently portrayed as having been devoid of talent by others, accompanied by the notion that it was some great achievement to get that team to 16 wins. Sorry, but that's a vast overstatement. I think that team underachieved; whether it should have been two wins better or five, it had the talent to do better than 16-15, despite the ongoing protestations of the Bare Cupboard Coalition.

No way...Absolutely no way. I'll take a team led by Cade Davis over a team led by Nater Carter. The only thing about that team was that they performed better early on compared to this team performing better at the end.

Those 8 teams ahead of us all had really good teams...maybe Mizzou would be a good comparison, but those other 7 teams had experience/talent. One of the best years in the Big12 that decade.

Sampson would have had James and Reynolds on that roster so he would have had a better shot of getting there. If he's talking about just the roster that Capel had...NO WAY.

Bookout was talking about the Roster Capel had only.

Besides Erdmann, who did Tubbs leave Sampson with?

They weren't pretty salty, not even kinda salty, actually.

I'll agree that we had some pieces, but without the better half of an our recruiting class intact we weren't going anywhere.

And just for the record, I don't connect Sampson with our current issues at all.

To continue, record at VCU

2002-2003 18-10
2003-2004 23-8
2004-2005 19-13
2005-2006 19-10

How would the fans react if we hire another mid major coach who has a 38-23 record in his last 2 years? Jeff finished 5th in his conference the year we hired him.

I know I wouldn't be happy. This program deserves someone who finished higher than 5th in a mid major conference.

The only thing about that team was that they performed better early on compared to this team performing better at the end.

That is so funny... this years team lost 9 out of our last 11 games with 7 of them blowouts.
